Game Notes: As the sun rose on Saturday morning, the coaches and kids were excited for playing their first game in 2 weeks. However, a few showers passed by during the early games under a pretty chilly day and the coaches were worried that once again the game would be cancelled. By 12:30PM, the clouds disappeared as the team arrived at Riker Hill for a battle against the powerful Earthquakes.

The team was first advised that Matthew McLaughlin’s powerful kick and strong defense would be missing during the game. This concerned the boys since the team has never played a single game this season without all 11 on the roster. That statistic alone is very impressive and we hope not to miss anyone in the future.

The opening period started with Ethan in goal, Jacob Gannon, Jake Hyman and Matt Leviss on defense and Richi, Josh, Evan and Dan on offense. The starting offensive line played very well and had quite a few shots on goal which would have been goals if not for some great goaltending by the Earthquakes. In the 2nd period, Alec and Drew came roaring off the bench to spark the defensive line anchored by Ethan and prevented any shots on goal as Matt L. took a well deserved rest for playing defense in the prior period. On offense, Toronto FC went back to work as Jacob Gannon netted a goal with the assist by Evan. Dan and Jake Hyman also put pressure on the other team which allowed Jacob to score. It should be noted that this was Evan’s first assist of the season. Congrats!

In the 3rd period, Evan was in goal and was kept quite busy as the Earthquakes placed a large amount of pressure on the defensive line of Matt L., Richi and Josh. Evan made some awesome saves to preserve the shutout. On offense, Alec, Ethan, Jake and Drew tried to score several times but were unsuccessful.

In the 2nd half, the team regrouped and Ethan took a nice pass from Dan and scored the team’s 2nd goal of the game. Dan has become our leading assist leader for the team and it should be emphasized that without an assist there is no goal. But more importantly, the coaches do take notice of the teamwork of all the players who pass the ball down the field to the open player. Without team work, Toronto FC would lose this game and probably the other games as well. In the 6th period, the coaches sat out Ethan, Jacob and Jake and the rest of the team came up big to preserve the shutout. The earthquakes sent all 7 of their players on offense in order to try to score and what the coaches saw was very impressive. Alec, Josh, Matt L. and Drew tried very hard to keep the ball on the other team’s side but when they realized what they were up against they were smart enough to help the defense which was anchored by Richi and Evan. Dan was kept busy in goal as well and made several saves. The coaches were proud of the team especially during the 6th period as it goes to show, team work wins games!

MVP Offense: Jacob Gannon- Jacob played a great game as he once again found the net and scored his 2nd goal of the season. He also placed a bit of pressure on the other team throughout the game allowing the team to score its 2nd goal.

MVP Defense: Matthew Leviss: Matt played a flawless game on defense against some very large boys and kept the ball out of the goal area. Matt was also smart enough to realize during the 6th period to come back on defense to help out the team. That is the exact characteristic that makes a good soccer team.
