Posted Sep 22/13 - Young nets hatrick in Riels Home opener

FIRST period

Riels dug themselves a hole being down 3 – 0 in the first period.  The Vics scored

3 goals within ten minutes, one on the power play on Riels net minder Kyle Vandemosselaer.

SECOND period

After the first period intermission, the Riels came out flying!  Forward, Glen Young found the mesh on the

power play at 2:08, assist coming from Brian Michaels and Sean Christensen.

The Riels were dominant in the first seven in half minutes when Skyler Eastman was sent on a break

away, but only to be stopped by Vics goaltender Nolan Bray!  Bray made some key saves keeping the Vics

ahead.

Then at 8:43 of the second period, Tanner Joseph took advantage of a misplay at center ice and came

down the left wing, fired a high shot in the top left hand corner beating Vandemosselaer.  The Vics took

advantage regaining their 3-goal lead.

Riels didn’t back down using the body and winning all the battles down low in the Vics zone.  When the

new Russian, Artur Raeviskiy redirected a shot that beat goalie Bray with assists going to Miguel Gauthier

and Brian Dies at 12:20 of the second period.

Riels outshot the Vics  19 – 5 in the second frame .

THIRD Period

Riels continued where they left off in the second out hussling the Vics when at 6:37, Glen Young got his

second goal of the contest from a feed from captain Michael Gorrie to the make the score 4 – 3 Vics.

Three minutes later on the power play, Glen Young capped off his hatrick goal from a pass from Travis

Ziprick to tie the game at 4.

The Riels had a chance to put it away late in the game, but Nolan Bray made some great saves to hold off

the Riels and send it into overtime!  Riels outshot the Vics in the third 14 -4.

OVERTIME

It took 52 seconds playing 4 on 4, Brian Dies and Brett Charette worked their magic cycling the puck deep

in the Vics zone when Charette took the puck off the boards, danced his way to the high slot and buried a

beautiful low left side shot and beat Bray to put the Riels to victory!

COACHES CORNER

Head coach, Ryan Frykas stated after the game that the hard work cycling the puck deep in the Vics zone

and getting more shots directed to the net made the Riels  have more opportunities to score.  The Riels

took the neutral zone totally away from the Vics in the second and third period.  It was an all around team

win.  Every player did their jobs according to plan.
