Posted Nov 11/13 - Riels Beat Hawks in OT Thriller

FIRST PERIOD

Hawks come out flying working hard in neutral zone and winning battles early.  They were creating a lot of scoring chances.  Riels goal tender Ryan Brown had a good 1st period, keeping his team close.

Then at 9:27 Brett Charette came across the Hawks blue line then made a drop pass to Russell Trudeau who sniped a shot top shelf on net minder Stuart Fleury.  That was his 15th of the season.  The game continued fast paced up and down throughout the period until the Hawks finally beat Ryan Brown late in the period at 19:23 when Mike Lorange finished off a play with assists coming from David Lafleche and Jayden Pollock.  That ended the period at one apiece.  Hawks outshot the Riels 13 – 8.

 

SECOND PERIOD

The Riels came out skating in the second taking the play to the Hawks early when Brett Charette found the mesh with assists coming from Trudeau and Ziprick at the 1:45 mark.

Then Jesse Toth scored for the Hawks at 3:58 to tie it up again at 2 – 2 with assists going to Riley Court.

Russell Trudeau scored his second goal of the game and 16th of the year with assist going to Brett Charette, at the 7:15 mark.  There was no other scoring in the second period, but was a hard fought game end to end.

The Hawks outshot Riels 13 – 8 again.

 

THIRD PERIOD

There were a lot of close calls from both sides of the rink where there was chances and pucks ringing off the post and crossbars.  Then at 111:03 the Hawks tied it up David Lafleche scored with helpers coming from Court and Toth.

Then nineteen seconds later, Russell Trudeau had his third of the night and 17th of the season from Brett Charette.  The Hawks kept coming within 24 seconds when they tied it up 4 – 4.  Mike Lorange scored from Ryan McDonald at 11:46.

The last five minutes of the game was exciting, scoring chances on both ends but strong goal tending on both ends kept it dead lock at 4 – 4.

The Riels killed off a power play for the Hawks late in the game.  The period ended at 4 -4 tie.  Overtime was next. 

Hawks defensemen Colby Ferbers received a penalty in OT at 2:49.  That put the Riels on the power play.  The Riels have been deadly this year with the man advantage tops in the league.  Riels moving the puck around, then finding Brian Dies high in the slot blasting a slapshot past net minder Fleury for the win

5 -4 in OT.  Assists coming from Travis Ziprick and Brett Charette.  That snapped a seven game wining streak of the Hawks.  The Riels record now sits at 15 wins and 1 loss.  The Hawks outshot the Riels

37 – 30.

 

THREE STARS

First star Brett Charette, second star Russell Trudeau and third star Ryan Brown.

 

COACHES CORNER

Key Factors   -      We won in a tough barn to play in and Hawks are very strong at home.

  • We played a very discipline game.
  • Solid in neutral zone
