Posted Dec 30/13 - Riels give Vics early Christmas Gift

FIRST PERIOD
Vics opened the scoring on their first shot when Brad Angus scored his 9th of the season at the 1:18 mark with assists going to Aaron Couvier.

Riels dominated play all period but Vics goal tender Nolan Bray was outstanding.  Then finally the Riels broke the ice when Brett Charette blasted a shot high in the top shelf-beating Bray to tie it at 1-1 with help coming from Russell Trudeau and Brian Dies at 18:24.  Then at 19:09 captain Michael Gorrie scored his 21st of the season from Brian Michaels and Glen Young.  That ended the period 2-1 Riels and outshot Vics 16-8.

SECOND PERIOD

Riels continued their ways in the second frame at the :48 second mark on the power play when Brian Michiels slammed a one-timer past Bray on a beautiful set up from Sean Christensen and Glen Young.  Then Riels kept on pressing when Russell Trudeau sniped his 24th of the season unassisted on net minder Bray.  That made it 4-1 Riels.  With less than a minute later at 9:36, Skyler Eastman scored his 4th of the season with an assist coming from Brian Dies.  Then the Riels Russian forward Artur Raevskiy scored an amazing goal at 10:20 with assists coming from Brian Dies and Skyler Eastman.  The route was on 6-1 Riels halfway through the second.  The Riels with the big lead decided to forget how to play two-way hockey.  The Vics didn’t know what hit them 6 unanswered goals by the Riels.  Wow!

Then at 12:12 of the second, rookie Will Dairymple scored his 1st of the season on a breakaway beating Riels net minder Kyle Vandemosselaer.  At 13:59 Oliver Hanna scored his 8th of the season with assists coming from Kal Kastes.  Well now, it was 6-3 Riels with 6 minutes still remaining in the second.  Then at 19:26, Vics forward Brad Angus scored his 10th of the season from Oliver Hanna and Joseph.  Now we have a game 6-4 Riels after two periods.  Riels out shot the Vics 14-13.

THIRD PERIOD

Riels coaching staff decided to make a goal tender change at the start of the 3rd period.  Ryan Brown would replace Vandemosselaer.  Riels still in control 6-4.  Vics and Riels have had great rivalries in the past.  You knew it was going to end that way again.  The Vics won the neutral zone halfway through the second and early in the 3rd.  A lot of two on ones and that’s how they scored at 4:21 of the third when Joseph finished off a play and beat Brown to make it 6-5 Riels with assists going to Tyler Pchajek.  Confidence just rose more and more for the Vics.  Then Tremblay scored at 6:34 to tie it up at 6-6 with an assist going to Angus.  Wow, 6 straight goals for the home squad.  They had everything going their way now.  Riels took 2 penalties in a row, but were able to kill them off.  Then at 17:11, Riels veteran Glen Young scored a nice hard working goal to lift the Riels back into the lead of 7-6 with less than a minute to go.  The Vics pulled their net minder Bray less than a minute to go forcing the play deep in Riels territory only to see Daniel Popel score his 5th of the season to tie it 7-7 and force overtime.  Levesque had the lone assist.

OVERTIME

What a barnburner.  Riels goal tending and poor defensive play could not stop the Vics.  One good thing one team would still go home with a point.  Well it happened again at 2:28 of overtime on a missed play in the neutral zone Vics took full advantage and set up the winning goal by Danick Levwsque his 7th of the season from Neufeld and Melna.  What a comeback.  “Great game for the fans.  Great 28 games boys –Very proud of you.  Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year to all the Riels players, families, supporters, sponsors, coaches and staff members of the Riels family.   Wish you all the best in the New Year.  See you in 2014 from president Larry Frykas”
