Riels 5 vs Twins 0  Sun. Mar. 9, 2014

 

FIRST PERIOD

It all started off with a close checking affair with chances on both ends.  Riels opened the scoring at 12:33 when Glen Young took a hard shot off the left wing that hand cuffed Twins goalie Connor Bell.  Assists went to Michael Gorrie and Brock Bram.  That was the only goal scored in the first period.  Riels outshot the Twins 14-12.

 

SECOND PERIOD

All Riels, total domination in the second period.  Chris Prejet scored at 2:54 with help from Artur Raevskiy and Jens Giesbrecht.

Then Artur Raevskiy tallied another goal at 3:49 on the same shift to make it 3-0 Riels.  The line of Raevskiy, Prejet and Giesbrecht were on fire winning all the battles on both sides of the ice.

The Riels were not finished yet.  Brian Michiels scored on the power play at 8:30 with assists going to Michael Gorrie and Sean Christensen.  Riels just outskated the Twins and forced the Twins to take seven minor penalties.

With a 4-0 lead, Riels had a late power play chance with three minutes to go.  Then at 17:26, Stanislav Izvekov blasted a shot past new netminder Michael Newman with assists going to Brett Charette and Michael Gorrie.  Riels up 5-0 after two periods.  Riels out shot the Twins in the second 16-10.  Riels net minder Kyle Vandemosselaer was solid through two periods turning away 22 shots.

 

THIRD PERIOD

Riels played a solid defensive game in the third period giving the Twins nothing, just perimeter shots.  Riels out shot the Twins overall 38-31.  There was no scoring in the third period.  Riels can sweep the series on Tuesday night at Century arena.
