Riels 1 vs Raiders 3

FIRST PERIOD

Game 2 of the MMJHL Final at Mosienko Arena with a packed house.  What a buzz in the rink.

Riels net minder Ryan Brown has his second straight start and Raiders have changed to Brenden Fiebelkorn.  Riels started out playing in the first period with close checking and shutting down the neutral zone.  Raiders had very little to work with.  Both teams took two penalties.  Riels opened the scoring at 9:50 of the first on the power play when captain Michael Gorrie came down the right side past center ice undressing the Raiders defenseman - cutting in on goal and finding the mesh bar down beating Fiebelkorn to take a 1-0 lead.  Assists came from Travis Ziprick and Russell Trudeau.  That would be the only goal of the period.  Raiders out shot the Riels 12-11 after one.

SECOND PERIOD

Raiders opened the scoring on the power play with one second left on a goalmouth scramble and Cole Thalman scored with an assist going to Nik Lynam.  Raiders then took the lead on a beautiful three-way passing play when forward Ryan Seekings blasted a shot past Riels net minder Ryan Brown making it 2-1 Raiders with an assist from Nik Lynam and Ryan Sholdice at 5:12.  Riels had a chance to get back in the game on the power play at 8:53 when the Raiders took a delay of game penalty for knocking the net off on purpose.  Riels couldn’t get anything going, not many shots, good penalty killing by the Raiders.  Riels came up empty.  As soon as the penalty ended the Raiders broke out quickly out of their zone.   Two passes later Carson Rybuck finished off a play from a great pass from Nik Nynam to make it 3-1 Raiders.

Riels had another chance to get back in the game when Raiders forward Cole Thalman took a four-minute high sticking penalty at 13:33.  Riels power play back to work, lots of perimeter passing but no shots.  Riels just could not get anything going with their potent offence.  Again, great penalty killing to the Raiders.  That would be all the scoring until the second period.  It was 3-1 Raiders after two periods.  Raiders out shot the Riels 15-13.

THIRD PERIOD

There was no scoring in the third period.  Riels had some chances early but could not pull the trigger.  Raiders net minder Fiebelkorn was pretty shaky at times but the Riels just could not find the handle tonight.  Riels had three more power play chances in the third period late, but could not score.  Net minder, Ryan Brown had a great game stopping 39 shots.  Now the series is tied at one game each.

Next game is Sunday night, April 6th at 7:30 at Southdale CC.  Come and cheer your Riels back to victory.
