Glenvar handcuffs Chilhowie

SALTVILLE -- Glenvar's Lyndsey Hunter didn't score the most points, grab the most rebounds, or dish out the most assists.

But the senior guard might have been the primary reason the Highlanders left Northwood High School Monday night with the Region C, Division 2 girls basketball title.

Assigned to Chilhowie star Krystal Patton for the last three quarters after Chelsea Arthur drew two quick fouls, Hunter shackled Patton and fifth-seeded Glenvar took a 39-28 win over the No. 2 Warriors.

The Highlanders (19-7) will play Region D runner-up Lee Saturday in a state quarterfinal at the Salem Civic Center, while Chilhowie (17-8) takes on Region D champ J.J. Kelly in Bristol.

"We've actually been better on the road than at home," Glenvar coach Billy Wells said after the win despite three long road trips in seven days.

It helps when you have players like Hunter, whose contributions to victories are far beyond a stat sheet. A look at her fundamentally sound defense on Patton told the tale.

Patton, who sliced through the Radford defense for 19 points and some nice assists in a 47-42 semifinal win Friday, scored 15 points but made just 3 of 18 shots.

"She's a great player," Hunter said of Patton, "but we just tried to keep her from penetrating. We wanted to make her take jumpers. I think as the game went on, she got a little frustrated."

Patton didn't receive much help from her teammates, who combined for just 13 points on 5-of-29 shooting and couldn't take advantage of Glenvar's diamond-and-one defense.

Warriors coach Mark Halsey wanted to see his team create more post-up chances against a smaller opponent.

"I thought we could have done more damage inside," he said. "We've seen similar defenses this year, so we know what we need to do against it. It just came down to not making enough shots."

Meanwhile, Glenvar managed to cobble together a decent second half after a one-point second quarter put it in a 15-13 hole at halftime. Arthur, who canned a pair of 3-pointers and scored eight first-quarter points, returned after halftime to stick a 3 and then hit six fourth-quarter free throws to finish with a game-high 17 points.

"We made a couple of adjustments at halftime and it helped us score better," Wells said.

With a six-point lead and nearly six minutes left, the Highlanders forced Chilhowie out of its matchup zone with a delay game. Using what amounted to a four-guard lineup, they played keepaway and did just enough at the foul line to close out the win.

Hunter supplied the killing blow, stalking Patton as she hunted for a 3 from the left wing in the final minute and blocking it to teammate Jessi Strom.

"That was a sweet play," Hunter said with a grin.
