Arthur beats buzzer, GHS beats Byrd

By Staff Writer

Chelsea Arthur hit a three pointer at the buzzer as the Glenvar girls stunned William Byrd in a girls’ basketball with a 34-33 win in Vinton Tuesday. The win kept the Highlanders unbeaten for the season.

The dramatic shot put a decisive end to what had been a defensive duel between the two Roanoke County teams. The Group AA Terriers led 11-4 after one period but Glenvar shut them out in the second quarter to close the gap to 11-10 at the half.

Byrd led for most of the second half, but the Highlanders hung close and Kayla Dehart’s three drew them close in the closing minute. Then, with the clock running down and Byrd up 33-31, Arthur put the nail in the coffin.

“Our girls played great defense,” said GHS coach Billy Wells. “They have two six foot post players and our tallest girl is Ashley Trivette at 5′7″, and she did a great job.”

Jessi Strom led Glenvar with 11, Lyndsey Hunter had nine and Dehart had eight, all in the second half. Arthur’s game-winner was her only basket of the game.

Last week Glenvar got off to a great start with two wins to open the season. They put the pedal to the metal, scoring the first 15 points of the season in last week’s season-opening win over James River. The Highlanders led 34-11 by the half and went on to a 56-30 win over the Knights.

Glenvar got balanced scoring from the five starters in the win. Arthur and Strom had 13 points each, Hunter had 10 points, and Dehart and Molly Wilbourne had eight each for Glenvar.

On Friday night Glenvar won at Group AA Alleghany, 49-35. Arthur had 15 in this one, Strom had 14, and Hunter had 10.

Glenvar was home to Northside on Wednesday but results were too late for publication. On Friday the girls are at Ft. Chiswell for what promises to be a tough game. Glenvar split two with the Pioneers last year.

“They have a girl(Nancy Thacker) who had 42 points in a game, and in another game she had 25 in the first half,” said Wells. “But our girls are excited to play. I think when we got home from Byrd Tuesday they were ready to take on Northside when we got off the bus, but I told them to go home and get some sleep.”
