DOGS SEASON COMES TO A PREMATURE END

The Dogs entered the weekend in control of their own fate having to win 2 out of 4 games to make the Midget AAA Provincials.  The Dogs started the weekend with a 3-0 loss to Cloverdale but kept their hopes alive in the second game with a 7-1 victory.  Needing to win only one of the two games on Sunday and with their season on the line the Dogs fell short dropping the opener 3-0 followed by a 5-3 defeat, thus ending the Dogs season and marking the first time in the Dogs 10 year history that they will not be participating in the Midget AAA Provincials losing out of the final birth based on a runs against calculation.

Even though the 2009 season ended in disappointment and fell short of the normal standard of excellence set by previous Dogs teams the old saying of "what doesn't kill you will only make you stronger" is the message to take away from this season.  Hopefully the potential returning players will take it as an experience to learn from--to understand that hard work, intensity, and commitment are the cornerstones of success and to provide the motivation to work that much harder for next season, to say to themselves "never again" thereby working towards making their own positive mark in the history of RiverDogs baseball.  As metioned to the players on a one-on-one basis after their final game on Sunday it was clearly outlined the positive attributes and potential that is there in each and every one of them but it will only be realized if they are committed to correcting their weaknesses and building their strengths.

This season also marks the end for the Dogs only graduating player and team captain, Grady Chalmers.  As a player for the last 3 seasons Chalmers demonstrated what the program was all about--it was guaranteed at the end of every weekend his uniform would be covered in dirt and blood through the flat out, no holds barred way he played the game.  His intensity and competitive spirit was demonstrated to the bitter end as he sat out with injury for most of the season and when he did take the field he did it in pain including begging to be DH'd in the final game on Sunday with the sole purpose of doing whatever he could to help the team succeed.  His presence on the field will be sorely missed but at the same time we wish him all the best in his future endeavours.
