Brewers stay perfect with comeback win The Glencoe Brewers improved to 6-0 Tuesday night after downing the Hamburg Hawks 7-3 in a thrilling come-from-behind victory for the growing fan base at Vollmer Field. Starting pitcher Derek Weber was effectively wild on the mound as he walked eight guys, but also only gave up five hits and struck out six in six and two-thirds innings of work. The only runs the Hawks scored came in the third inning when the bases were walked loaded and Clint Aretz delivered a three-run double for Hamburg’s first hit of the game. Other than that the Brewers stranded 11 Hamburg runners on the bases. After falling behind 3-0, the Brewers began chipping away at the lead with one run in the fifth. Then in the sixth they got a big lift from Stephen “The Manager” Wiblemo’s two-run blast to give them a 4-3 lead. It was the Brew Crew’s game from then on as they played small ball and the Hawks folded up with four errors to help score three more runs and pad their lead. They didn’t need it, though, as Weber kept Hamburg scoreless into the seventh and Colt Trebesch relieved him to get the save. After the game Wiblemo was named the KGLB Radio Player of the Game for his big hit and diving catch in right field. He was given a free a coupon for one free buffet at Unhinged Pizza in Glencoe and has been staking the place out all night waiting for it to open. Somebody better tell Jason to have a hot sausage and mushroom ready to go. |
