I am the only child born to the late Loy Rayford Baker and Martha Abernathy Baker of Conover, NC on June 24, 1950;

Surviving my husband, the late William P. Goodwin, MD.

 

I AM PROUD TO BE:

Stepmother to Maje Goodwin Phillips; MD, Grandmother to Camryn Alexis Phillips; Godmother to twins, Malcolm and Olivia, children of Mr. and Mrs. Denzel Washington and Faithful member of Abundant Life International Baptist Church.

 

MY EDUCATION:

Graduated with honors from Newton-Conover High School, BSW from Livingstone College, MSW from Appalachian State University, Psychology and Social Work degrees from University of Munich.

 

MY PROFESSIONAL AFFILIATIONS INCLUDE:

Vice president, Onslow Democratic Women; Secretary, Auxiliary of the National Medical Association; Vice President, Auxiliary of the Old North State Medical Society; Board member of Eastern NC Sickle Cell Anemia and North Carolina Symphony; Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and Who’s Who Among Black Women Professionals.

 

MY EXPERIENCE:

Elected Delegate, North Carolina Democratic Convention 2012; Campaign worker, President Barrack Obama 2008 and 2012, Attended both of President Obama’s inaugurations and invitation only tea with First Lady Obama at the White House.

I was shocked but unafraid. I went through my journey trusting God. In addition, I went through radiation therapy and worked every day. I cried sometimes but I still had to trust God. I asked the Lord why me, but I still had hope. My friends walked me through with prayer.  My husband walked me through with love and understanding. I made it through by God’s grace and His healing power.

I have faced cancer twice with my husband and it was the last thing I was expecting to happen to me! I had not had any major surgeries or illnesses in my whole life.  Now all of a sudden I was faced with this, cancer! Having made it safely through surgery, chemo and radiation. I can truly say that “God has been good to me.” He gave me a good husband and caregiver who never missed any appointments or treatments. He was always there when I needed him. I believe that my “turning it over to the lord and leaving it there” is why I am standing here today!

I am the president of Onslow County Prostate Cancer Support Group. I look radiation for 8 weeks in 2000 for cancer prostate. I am also a member of Onslow Memorial Hospital and Patient Advisory Council for 6 years. I believe God because he has taken care of me.

In 2010, I had just gotten married and beginning a new chapter in my life. I had just turned 42 years old and decided to have a physical and was sent to have a mammogram. I was called in to discuss the results, which my oldest, son Christian accompanied me. It was then that had diagnosed me with breast cancer. I remember the doctor saying hear anything else. I began with denial, and then came fear of the unknown, followed by anger. And then, “Why me?" As time went on, I noticed the support from family and friends who were showing me love, praying for me, accompanying me to chemo and radiation appointments. By the time I went to have my mastectomy, God was in my heart. My body was weak but my faith was strong, denial became acceptance, anger became love and
“Why Me?” became a blessing. My journey has taught me to appreciate life and see things and people through God’s eyes.

In 1998, I was diagnosed with lung cancer. As I sat there and listened to the doctor while he was talking. I was thinking to myself, Lord you are a healer. Immediately, I began to pray. Honestly, I decided to put it into God’s hands. I did not return to the doctor until 1 year after. At that time, the doctor couldn’t find absolutely anything. To God Be the Glory.

I had moments of despair. I never asked God, “Why me?” I held onto his hand and said, let it be your will. I lost faith because I did not want my family to suffer for me...but my God being almighty, God showed me the way.

 

 

 

 

 

Gloria Gail Buford

 

My cancer journey began in 1986, after a blood transfusion, during surgery, I was infected with a virus call hepatitis C.  I live with HCV unknowingly until it started to affect my body and attack my liver, eventually causing liver cancer. It became very clear that I would need a liver transplant in order to survive. I’m so blessed to have gotten my name on the liver transplant list, and my liver was successfully transplanted on Oct 1, 2013. In 2015, I was cured through a newly approved treatment.

I am enjoying one of life’s challenges of having cancer in my life. It has shown me how to become an overcomer so that others will see me as an example and understand how to survive and overcome cancer in their life also.

When I received a call informing me that I had colon cancer, I was really scared. I have been Christian most of my life but there comes a time when the words written in the Bible have to come alive in your life.

 

Constance Laverne Grady

 

My cancer journey initially was very frustrating and full of anxiety because I had a very serious problem but could not seem to get my male doctor to really take my symptoms serious. He continually told me that I was changing life and that  I should not worry, but my inner gut told me that I should seek a second  opinion, and  I did. I talked with one of my female doctors that I worked with and after explaining my symptoms; she immediately ordered a battery of test for me, which included the transvaginal ultrasound, CA-125 blood test. The ultrasound did reveal the cancer which was still encapsulated (did not appear to have spread). An abdominal hysterectomy was performed in 1998. Gastric fluid was obtained during the surgery that was later sent to Duke Medical Center to make sure the cancer did not spread into my abdominal cavity. I had to wait 30 days for allowing me to still be here to share this with all of you. Please ladies know your bodies always get a second opinion if you have any doubt.

 

Michael Randall Gray

 

In 2002 my final physical in the Marine Corps revealed a small mass on the corner of my right jaw which was discovered in September of 2014 to be low grade Lymphoma. I went through 6 months of chemotherapy now I’m in remission. I still go once a month to chemo maintenance.

 

Eunice Vernell Bennett

 

Any cancer journey can be scary but it has made me who I am today. Ultimately, God and prayer is the answer. When I went into surgery in June 2006 after having been  diagnosed with colon cancer,  my  husband, my family, my pastor and my church family were there praying for me continuously.  Little did I know that I would go into cardiac arrest, and yet the doctors were able to revive me and bring me back to life. God spared my life that I might be a testimony to the greatness of God and courage others who are going through the process. All cancer was removed and no chemo treatments were need. So no matter what I walk through I can always say, “What a faithful God is he! He is faithful all the time, everywhere and in every situation that we will ever have to endure.

 

David Wendell Sharpless

 

When I first found out I had cancer. I was shocked and I became depressed. Through my journey there were times that I felt I was going to lose my mind. Chemo, the very thing that is supposed to help made me feel weak, worn out and exhausted. God saw me through the whole journey. Now I am cancer free!

 

 

Thomas Legrand Flager

 

I had cancer two times. In 2006, I had prostate cancer which came from Agent Orange gas use during the Vietnam War. I had forty two treatments of radiation and I never missed day of work. I took radiation in the morning, slept during the day and worked at night for forty two days. In 2012 I had colon cancer. I had an operation in which I was cut from the bottom of my chest to the bottom of my stomach. I lost part of my colon and the doctors didn’t think I would be able to live but God said, it was not my time to go yet. I thank God every day.

When I was diagnosed with cancer in 2000, I was sent to Greenville, then Chapel Hill for treatments, where I am still going once a year. I am free of cancer now for a couple of years.

Why I chosen I’ll never know; I guess God decided this long ago, Thanks God  hid foundation  for me was spiritually led; his grace and mercy provided to me as he bled. Can’t entertain fear while going through; Cause he held his head up for me and you. Some are inspired by the words I write; But the “WORD” SAYS I’M NOT TO BE KEPT BY FRIGHT. In a few days surgery will change my outward look; but deep inside my change will have searching in the book. I will be trying to see how to take what was made new and turn it into a sacred view, of how God takes our broken pieces and creates a new beginning when the old thing ceases.
