1998!!

The 1998 Hampton High School Bulldog Baseball Team was special. They had a 16-7 overall record. The '98 club finished second in the conference and second in the District Tournament (both to University High, after the 1998 District Tournament Championship was rained out). Coach Scotty Bunton's team beat J. Frank White in the Regional Semi-Final and took down the Washburn Pirates to win a Regional Championship! Their final game of the 1998 season was a loss to eventual state champion, Coalfield in the Sectional game (commonly called sub-state).
This team was led by offensive powerhouse and current Hampton High School Hitting Coach, Jason Davenport. Davenport hit 28 career home runs! Setting the table was uncle to current Bulldog, Brody Hicks, Mr. Alan Little. Little had a 23 game hitting streak in 1998 and patrolled left field! Knuckleballing right hander, Andy Miller and and right hander, Casey Carden led the pitching staff.
Kenny Andrews held down centerfield. Timmy Garland was the main man behind the dish receiving the pitchers. Jonathan Matherly, who showed out at shortstop at a recent alumni game, showed out at the shortstop position on the 1998 team. Buck Odom held down right field, and corner IF spots when needed. Chris Stevens was a main stick in the lineup and along with Odom (and Davenport), manned the corner IF spots.
Cody Vines joined Matherly up the middle at 2B. Matthew Roark provided depth at the catcher position. Daniel Bowling was a good stick off the Bulldog bench. Jason Carden also provided depth, as did Chuck Nave and Eddie Teague, and the late late, Joey Miller. We look forward to honoring Coach Scotty Bunton's ball club, today, Monday, May 2nd.
