Posted July 4, 2017
CAIRNS, SK - The Saskatoon Diamondbacks were cruising, up 5-1 after 3.5 innings powered by Bryce Libke on the mound and a 3 run dinger by Ethan Godson. Then the wheels fell off and the Dbacks found themselves down 6-5 at the end of 4 innings. The Dbacks tied it up in their half of the seven and then scored two in the eighth for the win. Libke went 5 innings on the mound surrendering 6 runs, 3 earned, on 5 hits with 3 BBs and 6 K's. Connor Coverett pitched the next two innings allowing 1 hit with 2 BBs and 5 Ks. Ryan Olchoway finished things off earning the save with 2 K's.
Godson led the offence going 2 for 5 including a 3 run homer. Olchoway, Nolan Machibroda and Tyrone Polson were each 2 for 3. JD Storozynsky was 2 for 4, while Coverret went 1 for 2. Brayden Tiede rounded out the offence going 1 for 1.
In the second game, the Dbacks put up 16 runs on 14 hits to beat the Giants 16-0. Machibroda got the win pitching a complete game. The Dbacks offence was led by Tiede who picked up 4 RBIs on 2 hits. Coverett had 3 RBIs while going 3 for 5 at the dish. Garrett Krawchuk and Machibroda were both 2 for 4 while Godson, Olchoway, Drayson Snell and Ryan Crilly each picked up a hit.
WIth the win, and only two games remaining, the Dbacks appear to have secured second place with a 23-5 record. If the Cubs win out and the Dbacks lose, they would both have identical 23-7 records. However, the Dbacks would finish second since they have the better head to head record.
The Dbacks now travel to Minneapolis for a tournament before returning to take on the Cubs on July 13, 2017 and finish the season against the Red Sox on July 18, 2017.
