Bird Island defeats St Patrick in the second round 6-4

The Bird Island Bullfrogs defeated the St Patrick Irish 6-4 in the second round of the Minnesota Amateur Baseball State Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

Bird Island jumped out to an early lead, scoring 3 runs in the top of the first inning. Dylan Gass singled and Shawn Dollerschell walked, to put two runners on base for Tyler Hebrink’s home run.

St Patrick answered back…scoring two runs on three hits in the bottom half of the first inning.

Bird Island added to their lead in the 3rd inning. Singles by Gass, Dollerschell and Mark Neubauer loaded the bases. A double to left centerfield by Elliot Serbus scored Gass and Dollerschell. Neubauer was thrown out at home plate on the play, but the Frogs added two runs to their lead.

St Patrick cut into that lead, scoring a run after a walk and an error in the bottom of the third inning. The Irish also added a run in the 5th after a single, a stolen base an another single.

Starting pitcher Jesse Bjur left the game with a 5-4 lead in the 5th inning. Drafted pitcher Adam Theis from Kimball came into the game in relief for the Frogs. He pitched the remaining 4-2/3 innings and didn’t allow a run.

The Frogs added an insurance run in the top of the 7th, when Dollerschell reached on an error and scored on a double by Hebrink.

Bird Island held on, not allowing another run to St Patrick, despite the Irish having the bases loaded in the 8th, and two men on base in the 9th.

At the plate: The Frogs combined for 6 runs off of 13 hits.

Tyler Hebrink led the Frogs, going 3-4 with a double, a HR and 4 RBI’s. Elliot Serbus went 2-4 with a double and an RBI, Dylan Gass went 3-5 and scored 2 run, and Shawn Dollerschell went 2-4 and scored 3 runs. Mark Neubauer, Andy Dollerschell and Andrew Brooks also added a hit.

On the mound: Jesse Bjur pitched 4-1/3 innings, and draftee Adam Theis pitched 4-2/3 innings and picked up the win. The pair held St Patrick to 4 runs and 8 hits.

With the win, the Bird Island Bullfrogs advance to play the Fairmont Martins next Saturday, September 1st at 11:30 AM.
