Hollanders Split the Weekend

The Cologne Hollanders had two league games this past weekend. Going into the weekend there were only three games remaining on the season and Cologne needs to win at least two of the last three to finish take the 7 seed in the CRVL standings. Young America hosted the Hollanders saturday night for their annual Merchant's Day. It was a hot game, but the fans came out nonetheless. Casey Clemensen got the start for the Hollanders and breezed through the Cardinal lineup for five innings.  The Hollanders managed to get the game's first run in the top half of the third when Brandon Fritz lead off with a walk. Kyle Twait tried for the sacrifice but  both Twait and Fritz were safe on the bases after an error. Tanner Luebke drew a walk to load 'em up. Cole Pengilly brought in the go ahead run with a sacrifice fly to left than scored Fritz. The Hollanders were held scoreless in the fourth, but created some distance in the fifth. Twait lead the inning off with a walk and was moved to second hit a base hit from Casey. Cole picked up his second RBI of the afternoon after his single. Then Zack Nelson came up big with a single that brought home both Casey and Cole. The Cardinals were able to squeak something out of Casey during the sixth by scoring one run. The Hollanders responded by scoring one in the seventh. With an 0-2 count and two outs, Kyle Brazil got hit by a pitch. Zack Nelson hit a double that allowed Brazil to score from first but the inning ended after YA threw out Nelson trying to take third base. Young America managed to keep within two runs with a two run homerun in the bottom half of the seventh. After seven great innings, Casey's day on the mound was over. Zack Nelson followed Casey by pitching the eighth and shutting down YA easily, but as seen earlier in the year that ninth inning has proven difficult for the Hollanders. The Cardinals didn't give up, After a hit and two walks, YA had the bases loaded with no outs. YA's nine hitter laced a single to right to cut the lead to one. The game then tied up after a wild pitch hit the lip of the plate and went sailing out of play. Zack managed to get the next guy out, but Bryce Panning hit a fly ball to center that was far enough to allow the runner to tag up and score the walk off run.

After the tough loss to Young America, the boys were right back at it the very next night with a showdown with the Glencoe Brewers. The loss to YA meant that the game against Glencoe became a must win and the boys kept on the gas the entire night. Alex Eichner started on the hill for the Hollanders and gave the team exactly what they needed: a great performance. Eichner went to distance by pitching seven innings giving up only four earned runs (six total) off of eight hits. But it was the bats that really came alive. Every Hollander with a plate appearance managed to find first base safely at least once throughout the night. If you wanted to get very technical that isn't entirely true as Joey Lilya reached on an error, but he did end up scoring so it's a warsh. The offense was so busy that it'd probably take a book to write out everything so here are the highlights. Tanner Luebke is getting hot at the right time as he scored four runs off of one double, two singles, two stolen bases, two RBIs, and a walk. Casey also scored four runs with two singles, two walks, and two RBI's. Cole Pengilly busted out with five RBIs, two runs scored, one single, and his first Hollander homerun. Kyle Brazil picked up three RBIs with a double, Zack Nelson scored two runs with two singles. Jon Kummer scored one run with two singles. And Brandon Fritz finished the night with three hits, one run scored and one RBI.

With the win against Glencoe, the Hollanders need the win against the upcoming Browntown. The next league game with be Sunday afternoon at Browntown. But before Brownton the Hollanders have one non-leauge game left as the Jordan Brewers will be coming to town Thursday night. That first ptch is schedule to take place at 7:30pm. Come enjoy the end of the 2018 season and cheer the squad on as they head into playoffs.

Ga Hollanders!
