Game Notes: The 2011 CRVL opener had a "must win" feel for the visiting Glencoe Brewers. The Mayer Blazers swept the season series last year, and the Crew wanted to put a halt to the losing streak of 2 games to Mayer.

The Crew jumped out quick on Mayer with a 6-1 lead after three innings. Dan Ford smacked a 3-run homer to left in his second at bat of the game. Mayer pecked away at the lead, but a quality start by John Thell only let the Blazers get within two runs at 6-4 in the 6th inning. That was close enough for the Brewers and the bats came to life in the 7th and 8th innings. Jason Schade led off the 7th with a towering homer to left. Rumor has it, a kid in New Germany received a quarter for returning the ball to the concession stand in New G. Between walks, hits and errors, the whole Brewer lineup reached base and after 7 innings, the Crew led 14-4. Mayer pecked away to get 1 unearned run off of Ryan Grams, so the Brewer bats got another shot at some runs. Dan Ford capped off a 5-5 day at the plate with an 8th inning hit. The highlight in the 8th came when Mark Wawrzyniak came within inches of hitting a pinch hit grand slam. Turns out Mark's older brother Scott wasn't impressed, so he decided to get thrown out at the dish, and the play resulted in a moon shot RBI single for younger brother Mark. Glencoe ripped off 5 runs in the 8th and Stephen Wiblemo pitched a 1-2-3 8th to give the Brewers the 19-5 win.

Busy week coming up for the Crew as they have games on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Check the schedule tab for specifics on times and locations.

Now the fun part from Sunday - The "Brewie Awards" that were earned...

1. "Has anyone seen my mask" Award - This goes to our catcher Josh Kraby for refusing to grab his mask after warmups to start the inning. Best part is, the umpire was ready to let the pitcher start throwing. Congratulations Josh!

2. "The Garbage Man" Award - This goes to Jaden Ford. Jaden did a great job of throwing all garbage out of the dugout into the field of play throughout the day. There wasn't a bottle of gatorade to kick if Gorr wanted to flip out and make a scene...Jaden had the dugout spotless :)

3. "The Fake Hot Box" Award - This award is given to Ryan Style. Ryan assumed he was out at second base on a grounder, so he just rounded the base and gave himself up. The umpire rules safe on the play, so now Ryan is a dead duck between 2nd and 3rd. In the middle of hot box, the umpire calls time and rules that he meant to say out at 2nd on some sort of phantom tag...priceless

4. "Did He Really Try That" Award - This goes to Tony Paggen. Tony thought by screaming at the first baseman as he ran to distract him would allow for his towering infield fly to drop for hit...it didn't, and I think that distraction trick quit working in the 5-6 year old little league division. Next time you may want to tackle him Tony.
