8/6/2015 The Shark 11, Lakers 1
From Wikepedia: Sharks are a group of fish characterized by a cartilaginous skeleton, five to seven gill slits on the sides of the head, and pectoral fins that are not fused to the head. Modern sharks are classified within the clade Selachimorpha (or Selachii) and are the sister group to the rays. However, the term "shark" has also been used for extinct members of the subclass Elasmobranchii outside the Selachimorpha, such as Cladoselache and Xenacanthus, as well as other Chondrichthyes such as the holocephalid eugenedontidans. Under this broader definition, the earliest known sharks date back to more than 420 million years ago. Acanthodians are often referred to as "spiny sharks"; though they are not part of Chondrichthyes proper, they are a paraphyletic assemblage leading to cartilaginous fish as a whole
All that said, Lakers lose to the singular Shark 11-1. Offense can't get anything going vs Shark ace Mark Dominic. Meanwhile pitching and defense play uncharacteristicly poorly (for example our shortstop made only his second error all year!!). Credit the Shark. Good luck to the Cobras and Angels as we hope that they can bring a championship home to the PNash. Lakers look forward to enjoying the rest of summer and next year. Thanks to our fans.
8/1/2015 Lakers sweep the Patriots with 14-8 win
In what has been the trend of not having many guys at weekend games the Lakers are able to win the offensive showdown and clinch another trip to state. Wendinger throws the last 5 innings of the game and keeps the Patriot bats at bay to allow the offense of the Lakers to keep scoring runs as he picks up the win in relief. Lakers scored early with a 3-0 and 4-1 leads. Then the Patriots score 6 in the 3rd inning and eventually have a 8-4 lead. Clark gets a 2 RBI single in the top of the 5th to cut the lead to 8-6 and it stays there until the top of the 8th when the Lakers are able to score 8 runs against the Patriots bullpen. Four Lakers have multi-hit games including Nalbach with 3 hits including a triple and Hogan with 4 hits with 2 RBI. Hard fought series by both teams and now the Lakers will go to state as the #2 seed out of the Park National league. First game in state will be on thursday evening at Red Haddox field in Bloomington. Congrats to all Park National teams on a great year of ball, with a tip of the cap to Cobras and Angels also representing the P-Nash in the MN Class A state tournament.
7/30/2015 Lakers win game 1, 12-2 over the Patriots
Lakers get a few runs early as the Patriots battle for a close game going into the 8th. Then the Lakers score 6 in the bottom of the 8th to end it in 8 innings with a walk off single by Gerber. Gerber had a good day going 4-5 with a walk and 2 doubles and a big HR over the scoreboard. Nalbach also had 4 hits and Miller and Veith each had 3 hits. Every starter for the Lakers had a hit. Gunny started and threw all 8 and seemed a little dissapointed he didn't get to throw the 9th, but he had a complete game giving up only 2 runs, 1 earned, with 7 K's. Next game is at Parade on Saturday at 2:30, see you at the ball park.
7/30/2015 Park National Playoffs begin for the Lakers
After a couple tune up games the Lakers get set to take on the Mpls Patriots in a 2 out of 3 series with the winner going to the Class A State Tournament. The Patriots defeated Baseball 365 in the first round of the playoffs sweeping the first 2 games of the series. First pitch will be at 7 pm at Parade on a what looks to be a great night for baseball. Lakers are the home team in the first game.
7/27/2015 Lakers come back vs Diamond Cutters and win 9-8
Both teams were a little thin on pitching and the Diamond Cutters were able to take advantage early getting an 8-1 lead after 7 innings. Then the Lakers were able score 6 in the bottom of the 8th, taking advantage of 4 walks and a few hits. Next Veith throws a clean top of the 8th and the Lakers start the bottom of the 8th with Joe getting a walk and an RBI triple off the bat of Purvis. He is stuck at third for 2 outs and then got home after a walk from Reichert, scoring on a past ball with Nally at bat for the win with the game ending after 8 due to a lighting restriction at Miller 8, the 9th inning couldn't be played. Hogan and Veith got their first innings of the year and threw well and Veith picked up his first Laker win. Next up will be the first of the best of 3 vs the Patriots.
7/23/2015 Lakers fall to Capitals 4-3
In what was a good back and forth battle the Capitals come up on top 4-3. Gunny starts and throws a solid 7 innings giving up only 1 earned run with 4 Laker errors behind him. Swanny comes in and throws well for 2 innings giving up a run, but having 3 K's. The offense for the Lakers never really gets going, but threaten often with 10 hits and only cross 3 runs. Miller and Podo each have 2 hits, while 8 of the 9 Lakers in the line up have a hit. Lakers have 1 more tune up game before the P-Nash 2nd round of the playoffs on Monday vs the diamond cutters at Miller 8 in EP. Then we get going in league playoffs on Thursday at Parade vs 2nd highest seed remaining.
7/21/2015 Lakers are 2 seed in P-Nash Playoffs
The Lakers finish in a tie for 1st in the Park National league and are the number 2 seed in the playoffs, losing the tie breakers to Cobra Kai. Very light week this week with a tune up game vs Capitals on Thursday at Miller 8 in EP and maybe another game Sunday or Monday in EP, opponent TBD. Playoffs will begin July 30th at 7 pm at Parade, vs the 2nd highest remaining P-Nash seed after the first round.
7/19/2015 Lakers bats get going and get W over Merchants 15-3
Lakers score early to take 7-0 lead after 2. Then the Merchants are able to cross 3 in the 3rd and the game remains close until the Lakers cross 7 runs in the the top of the 6th. Some highlights: Joe Samanant gets his first 2 hits as a Laker, 5 Lakers have multi-hit games led by Nalbach with 4 hits and Miller and Reichert with 3 hits each, Swanny comes in to throw the last 3 innings and picks up his 2nd PNash win in less than 48 hours. Win ends the league schedule and Lakers clinch at least a tie for 1st (if Cobras win tues, it will be a tie for 1st, but they own the tiebreaker over Lakers in head to head).
7/17/2015 Lakers - 4 Baseball 365 - 2, clinch no worse than 2nd place in PNash
Swanny takes the ball and throws all 7 innings. Offensively the LakeShow scores 3 in the first and then coast until the 5 when they score their final run, but also left the bases loaded. In the top of the 7th, trailing 4-2, 365 loads the bases with 2 outs, but Swanny gets a looking strikeout to end the game. This clinches the Lakers no worse than 2nd in Park National.
7/16/2015 Lakers win over Prior Lake 9-0
Genrich starts on the bump and throws all 9 to get the complete game shutout with 10 K's. He threw well through out the game and the defense played well behind him. Offensively, Lakers were able to get on base and get around. The Lakers drew 10 walks, had 11 SB's and 9 hits in the game. Veith, Miller, Sodoberg and Nalbach all had 2 hit games, while Merrill, Hogan and Kuhlman all had 3 SB's in the game. It was a good tune up game going into the last 2 P-Nash games of the year. Next up 365 on Friday and then Merchants on Sunday.
7/14/15 Lakers get beat by Cobras 8-0
Lakers come out flat and cant get it going vs the Cobras. Credit the Cobras as they put the ball in play early (5 or 6 IF hits), took advantage of some free passes later in the game and their pitcher threw well. Not a lot else to say on the Laker front, they had 4 hits and Merrill got a SB. Next up Prior Lake on thurs and then league games Fri and Sun vs 365 and Merchants respectively.
7/13/2015 Lakers fall to Berries 3-2
Lakers and Berries face off in what turns out to be a pitchers dual. Lakers score 2 in the 5th for their only runs of the game, but the Berries score 1 in the 5th and are able to cross 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th for a walk off win. Lucas Warren goes 2 for 3 with a run scored and Veith notched the only Laker RBI. Next up Lakers take on the Cobra Kai Dojo in a big P-Nash matchup.
7/10/2015 Lakers jump out early and hold on for 5-0 win over Bluesox
Lakers score 4 runs in the top of the first and 1 in the top of the second and that is enought scoring, as they beat the Bluesox 5-0. Genrich throws the complete game shutout with 9 K's. Merrill is the only Laker with a multi hit game, but Veith and Miller contributed 2 RBI each and the Lakers as a team had more doubles than singles (4 to 3).
7/8/2015 Lakers get the W over the Patriots 14-0
Lakers pound out 17 hits as the offense starts to click vs the Patriots. Five Lakers have multi hit games with Nally, Reichert and Miller collecting 3 hits a piece. Miller, Ty P and Reichert all have 3 RBI, while Nally and Reichert completed the double steal twice in the first 3 innings. Bennett get the start on the hill and throws 5 strong innings with 8 K's only giving up 2 hits. The defense plays error free baseball, which is always nice to see. Next up is the Bluesox on Friday at 8:30.
7/6/2015 Lakers and 365 rained out, make up TBD
The Lakers are going to have to wait for their first game coming out of the break with heavy rain last night causing Mpls parks to cancel the games at Parade in the late morning. Looks like the make up will be the 17th of July, but confirmation is needed (schedule will be updated once confirmed). Next up will be Patriots on Wed at 8:30.
7/1/2015 Lakers fall to Pub 5-2
Well, seems like a good time for a break for the Lakeshow. The Laker bats took early break for the 4th of July as there is really only one player to highlight offensively against the Pub. That player is Trevor Purvis who goes 3 for 3 with a 2-run HR to account for the only Laker runs. He took a 3-1 pitch and turned on it for a towering shot that was about half way up the trees past the fence in straight right field. The Pub play well, making the plays defensively and manufacturing 5 runs combined in the bottom of the 3rd and 4th innings. Lakers now take a few days off to celebrate America's birthday. Some items on tap for the weekend, Miller will be at a cabin contemplating how to pull a fastball, Paul will be at a different cabin hoping Joe and Nick dont follow in Chris' footsteps (pulling a hamstring riding a skateboard) and Podo will be in our nation's capital doing whatever it is Podo does off the baseball field. Happy 4th of July to the Laker Nation, be sure to celebrate, be safe and drink some malted beverages.
6/30/2015 Lakers travel to Elko and lose 11-6
Lakers travel with 12 guys and battle vs a good Elko team, but lose it in the late innings 11-6. Lakers out hit the home team 13-10, but cant cross enough runs. Elko's team is made for their park as their team hits a lot of fly balls and it is a short porch everywhere except for right center. Genrich starts on the bump and throw 6 strong innings to come away with the no decision. In the 7th and 8th the Laker pitchers struggle to find the zone and Elko gets a few timely hits. Offensively the Laker have 6 guys with multi hit games, including Miller with 3 hits and Clark with 2 hits and 2 RBI. Besides the outcome, nice night for ball and the Lakers have a game tomorrow against the pub before a few days off for the 4th of July weekend.
6/28/2015 Torential downpour washes out game vs SLP
6/26/2015 Lakers shutout Bluesox 6-0
Lakers are able to get back in the win column against the Bluesox. Swanny starts on the bump and throws all 7 to get the shutout. The Lakers got 2 in the first and 1 in the second and then threaten in the next 3 innings without crossing a run, then they are able to get some insurance runs crossing 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th. Offensively as a team the Lakers score 6 runs and get 14 hits. Rob leads the way with 4 hits, scores a run and has an RBI. Clark, Nally and Ty P. add 2 hits a piece. Next up the Lakers play SLP at RLS on Sunday.
6/25/2015 Lakers taste defeat againts Rats 5-2
Lakers out hit the Rats, but the teams only combined for 7 hits (4-3 in the Lakers favor). Rats were able to take advantage of free passes early on and jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the 2nd inning. Lakers chip away and pitching settles in, but when the Lakers threaten with multiple runners on they are unable to get the big hit. Not much else to say, except Lakers are back at it on Friday night at Parade vs BlueSox
6/23/2015 Lakers score 3 early and hang on for 3-2 win vs Lyons Pub
With 4 runs scored in the first inning and a half(Lakers up 3-1), we thought this might turn into a high scoring affair, but the pitchers for the Pub and Lakers had a different idea. This game turned into a pitchers dual with the Pub's pitcher, Miester, keeping the Lakers off the board after giving up 3 in the bottom of the first, and Tommy D throwing well for the Lakers. Tommy seemed to get stronger as the game went on and after the Pub got within 1 run and a runner at 3rd in the top of the 7th he struck out the last 2 hitters of the game to secure the win. Offensively outside of the 1st inning the Lakers were able to threaten but not get the timely hit, as they had 2 runners on in 3 out of the 5 innings they came to bat. Highlights are Podo reaching base 3 out of 4 plate appearances with 2 SB's and Veith having 2 hits and an RBI. Two league games at Parade on Thursday and Friday and then a Sun afternoon game at RLS.
6/19/2015 Lakers win vs Diamond Cutters 6-4
Lind starts on the mound and throws 5 strong innings with 8 K's and left with a 4-2 lead, both unearned runs. The Diamond Cutters are able to score 2 runs in the 6th to tie up the game and then Bennett throws 2 innings to get the win as the Lakers re-take the lead and then Swanny gets the save throwing the 9th. Offensively Peterson had 4 hits and 2 RBI, Veith and Podo added two hits. Podo and Soderberg each had added 2 RBI as well. Weekend off and then the Lakeshow has 3 league games next week.
6/18/2015 Lakers hold on to get win against the Cobras 4-3
For most of the game it was a pitchers dual with Tommy D on the mound for the Lakeshow and Beck throwing well for the Dojo that is Cobra Kai. Tommy threw well recording 7 strike outs and only giving up 3 hits through the first 6 innings. The Lakers had scored 2 in the 2nd and 2 in the 6th to take a 4-1 lead into the last inning. Cobras get 4 hits in the inning and score 2 runs before the last out is recorded at 2nd with the runner trying to advance on a single. Defensively the Lakers played well playing error free baseball and offensively J-Mill had 2 hits and Podo had 100% of the Lakers RBI. Game friday in EP vs the Diamond cutters.
6/16/2015 Lakers win over the Rats 9-3
In what turned out to be a little hectic before the game determining who was starting on the hill for the Lakers, turned into a 9-3 win vs the River Rats. A lot of good happened offensively, with the Lakers having 3 triples on the game off the bats off Hogan, Peterson and Purvis. Ben Podobinski had 3 hits from his leadoff spot in the order and got his first 2 stolen bases of the year, with the Lakers stealing 7 as a team. Luke Lind starts on the bump, after he drew the short straw and threw a solid 2 innings. The Genrich came in and pitched the final 5 innings to get the win. Special guest appearance in the Laker duggout with Kieran Palmer-Klein stopping by to watch a few innings of Laker baseball. Next up Cobra Kai.
6/12/2014 Lakers 13-0 over the Angels in 6 innings
Coming off a big exhibition win in Miesville, the Lakers stay hot and hit it all over the park in a 13-0 win over an always-tough Angels squad. Michael Swanson (Swanny) takes the hill and faces Chad Naegli who started vs. Lakers for the second time this season. Swanny pitches a gem in holding the potent Angel offense to just a single hit in his 6 innings of work. Lakers don't hit it out of the park but do hit it just about everywhere else to the tune of 20 hits. Game notes:
- Nick Nalbach, Chris Samanant, Mike Merrrill, Tyler Peterson, Luke Lind, and probably few others had multi hit games.
- Luke Lind recoded his first hit(s) as a Laker, the first coming on a sac bunt turned base hit.
- Shoutout to Podo.
- Nalbach is fast
- Bennett Johnson made his 2015 debut and pinch ran. Congrats on his engagement.
- In a continuing tradition of Lakers missing games on weekends, Gerber, Hogan, Reichert, and Gun Rack are all out. With an increasingly "girlfriend" theme taking over the Lakers, Reichert helps his girlfriend move. Genrich moves in with his girlfriend. Hogan's whereabouts are unknown.
- After the game, Lakers hold their first BBQ of 2015. With Jeff Miller leaving the party to go to a concert, the Lakers conceded the parking lot battle about 11pm to Angels who were last seen enjoying Thanksgiving dinner (or was it Tex Mex?). Lakers are 7-2 in the lot this year this department in 2015
Up next week is River Rats, Cobras, and then non conference vs. Contintental Diamond.
6/11/2015 Bluesox game rained out. Make up date TBD.
6/10/2015 Lakers come back to beat Miesville 5-4
Lind starts on the mound and throws 6 strong innings keeping the Lakers in the game. Swanny throws 1 scoreless inning and then Danyzck returns and thows the 8th and 9th to pick up the win. Lakers were getting hits and base runners early but couldn't get the timely hit to score. During this time the Mudhens are also getting some hits and crossing a run here or there. Lakers finally score in the top of the 7th to pull the score to 3-1, but Miesville answers with 1 in the 8th to make it 4-1 game going into the 9th. Chris gets on via walk and scores on a Ty P single, then Ty scores on a Gerber single and the score closes to 4-3. Hogan singles and Lakers have the go ahead run at 1st with 2 out, Miller at the plate. Count goes full and with the runners going, Miller hits a double to right center to score 2 for the Laker lead. Tommy takes them down in the 9th and Lakers are victorius. Miller and Ty each had 2 RBI and 4 Lakers had multi hit games, including Ben Podobinski (who also took over doing the scorebook when the Lakers scored their runs).
6/8/2015 Lakers win vs Merchants 5-0
Grant takes the ball and throws a complete game shutout. He had 6 strikeouts and only faced 2 batters over the minimum through 7 innings. Offensively the Lakers had 10 hits with 4 Lakers getting multiple hits. Although the Lakers couldn't get the big hit to have the big inning they were able to manufacture enough runs to get the W. Day off tuesday before three straight games wed-fri,
6/5/2015 Lakers get 2-1 win vs Baseball 365
Lakers get the win vs Nate Cousins led Baseball 365 team with a lot of regulars not able to be in attendance. The Lakers were able to still get 10 hits on the game and do just enough to win. The first 3 innings went quick with each team getting runners on but not able to get them in. Then in the bottom of the 4th 365 is able to cross a run to take a 1-0 lead that didnt last long with the Lakers crossing 2 runs in the top of the 5th to take the lead. That lead held as Swanny goes all 7 and picks up the W. Swanny got into and out of a few jams with the defense making most of the plays behind him including the game ending double play. Offensively the Lakers had good scoring chances in every inning but the first 2 with Veith, BK, J-Mill and Chris all having 2 hit games. Off weekend follow by a 4 game week for the Lakers.
6/4/15 Lakers bats get going to beat Stockmen's 14-3
Genrich starts on the bump and throws 8 strong innings, giving up only 2 earned runs and striking out 6.The defense wasnt all that sharp but there were a lot of good plays when they needed to be made. Offensively Lakers pounded out 17 hits with Ty P and Pervis both going yard (probably 1 and 2 for the slowest HR trots in the last 10 years for the Lakers). Seven of the Lakers had multi hit games with Hogan having 4 hits and Veith having 3 hits.
6/2/2015 Lakers travel to Burnsville and come away with 5-2 win
Luke Lind starts on the mound for the Lakers and throws 4 strong innings and then Dylan comes in to throw the 5th and 6th at the time the Lakers are able to score some runs so he picks up the win in relief. The last three innings are thrown by Genrich, Swanson and Gerber as the Lakers are able to maintain the lead. Danny Blasy, Trevor Pervis and J-Mill all have 2 hits for the Lakers as 8 of the 9 starters had at least 1 hit. Gerber hit his second HR of the year in the top of the 2nd as he and Blasy each have 2 runs scored. Lakers have an off day on Wed and then games Thurs and Fri at Stockmens and against 365, respectively.
6/1/2015 Lakers beat Patriots 3-2
Lakers get a late start to the night due to the early game at Parade having almost 20 runs scored. Grant gets his first start of the year and goes 6 strong innings giving up 2 runs (only 1 earned). Lakers couldn't get the offense going much, but was able to take advantage of a few walks and misplayed balls by the Patriots. Patriots score 1 in the first and then the Lakers answer with 1 in the bottom of the 2nd. There is now additional scoring until the Patriots score in the top of the 6th on an RBI double. Lakers finally put it together and cross 2 in the bottom of the 6th on a 2 RBI single from Reichert. Swanson picks up his first save for the Lakers. Lakers are back at in on Tuesday in the home of Jared Mountain, Burnsville.
5/29/2015 SSC Rained Out. Ty Peterson added.
All rain and no play makes the Lakers, well anxious to play some baseball. Lakers have played just 2 games this season. Only other news item (from last week) is that Tyler Peterson "comes home" to the Lakers. Weekend off and then four games next week. Patriots, Burnsville, Stockmans and B365 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday respectively.
5/28/2015 Lakers win 8-4 over Angels.
Lakers open up their 2015 Park National schedule against a very good Angels team and come away with the W (also won the parking lot, which didn't happen a lot last year for the Lakers). Genrich started on the mound and got into a little trouble in the 4th with an error and a few walks creating the scoring threat for the Angels. Angels were limited to 3 runs in the inning with Swanson coming in and getting the last out with 2 runners on. Swanny pitched the next 2 innings and got his first win as a Laker. Offensively the Lakers started a little late, but were able to bat around in the 4th to reclaim the lead at 5-3. That score held until the bottom of the 5th when Ryan Gerber hit a 3 run HR to add some insurance runs. A few highlights were, the HR, Nalbach going 2 for 3 with an RBI and a SB in his Laker debut and J-Mill getting stitches removed in the parking lot after the game. Back at it on Friday with a game at RLS vs Sport and Spine.
5/26/2015 Merchants game rained out. Make up date yet to be determined.
5/23/2015 Memorial Weekend Edition Season Preview
The upcoming 2015 season is missing some pieces from a 2014 that saw 4 regular season losses, a Park National league title, and deep run to third place in the MN Class A tourney. Gone (or taking year off) are both Skjeftes, Matt Schuld, and Tyler Ruemmele. The Lakers also lose Tommy Dancyzk to St. Louis of the Frontier League. So at the cover, the Lakers appear to be a little shorthanded. Laker Nation fret not as the Lakeshow reloads with following additions: Luke Lind from EPHS and NDSU will bolster the pitching as well play 1B/DH. Trevor Purvis (Bemidji State) will play OF/1B. Left handed UST slugger Ryan Gerber will provide depth and pitch some. Michael Swanson (UW Superior) is added as a pitcher. Nick Nalbach (UW Stout) looks to add depth to the middle infield.. Add these newcomers to returning Laker mainstays of Hogan, Merrill, Veith, Podo, Kuhlmann, JMills, Samanant, Edwards, Soderberg, Reichert and Genrich the Lakers expect to keep rolling int 2015. Put it together and the roster is fairly deep and well rounded and looks like this:
Pitching: Soderberg, Genrich, Edwards, Swanson, Frederick, Lind, Johnson, Gerber, Kuhlmann, Becker, Samanant, Hogan
Outfield: Merrill, Podo, Veith, Purvis, Samanant, Boyesen
Catching: JMiller, Blasy, Boyesen
1B/DH: Reichert, Lind, Gerber, Purvis, Soderberg
Infield: Hogan, Nalbach, Veith, Kuhlman, Reichert, Schneider, Frederick
After an opening day win vs the Hogs, the Lakers take Memorial weekend off before starting the grind with games against the Merchants, Angels, and exhibtion vs SSC. Note that due to high school playoffs, game vs Merchants is at Nieman 2 and game vs Angels is at Miller 8 in Eden Prairie
5/20/2015 Lakers win opener 8-5 against St. Anthony
Gerber snakes win in Laker debut. Lakers opened the 2015 season and came away with the win. The first few innings flew by as through the 4th the teams combined for 14 strikeouts. Genrich started and threw 3 innings with 5 K's and allowed only one baserunner. Swanson threw the next 3 innings and was efficient allowing only 1 run that reached base on a walk and the Hogs were able to manufacture their first run. As mentioned Gerber snakes the win, wanting to make a splash in his Laker debut. He threw well in the 7th and 8th, but gave up a 3 runs to the Hogs in the 9th as the game becomes tiedand goes extras. Lakers respond scoring 3 in the top of the 10th and Kuhlman comes in for the save. Offensively, the Lakers get one early, 4 in the 6th and then the 3 in the 10th. Hogan had 3 hits, 3 runs and 2 SB's. Reichert and Kuhlman each had 2 RBI and 8 of the 10 Lakers to get AB's got at least 1 hit. All in all a good opening game and now a few days off before starting league play next Tuesday.
