Orioles Win Season Opener in a High Scoring Extra Inning Game

Lennox Orioles vs. Sioux Falls Christian Chargers

Chancellor, SD     Monday, April 7th

The 2013 season started off with a big bang. The Orioles started off with the a 7 run inning in the first inning. After 2 errors to put Oldenkamp and Mechels on, Jordon Harrington homered to left-center field to make it 3 to 0. 3 walks later and then Nick Kayl's 2 run double made it 5 to 0. Lauters and Wallenstein both had RBI ground outs to make it 7 to 0 after the first. SFC answered with 2 runs in the first. Then SFC scored 5 in the 2nd to tie it up at 7. In the 6th SFC added 3 to their score and put the score up to 11-7. In the 7th Nick Kayl hit a 2 run triple to make it 11-9. Then Harrington singled in 2 runs. It was 11 to 11 to tie it up in the 7th. In extra innings nobody scored until the top of the 9th. Wallenstein singled to start it and Harrington would single him in. Heisinger hit a 2 RBI single to make it 14 to 11 Lennox. Than an error on the 3rd baseman from SFC gave up two more runs and made the score 16-11. SFC would load the bases in the bottom of the ninth but they couldn't score, because Harrington turned a 6-U-3 double play to end the game 16 to 11.

It was a good start to the Orioles season as Lennox won there season opener for the first time since 2010. Delane Hood threw the last 5 innings and earned the win for Lennox. The Orioles offense was helped thanks to a solid night from Jordon Harrington and Jake Heisinger.

The Orioles will face the Beresford Watchdogs in Lennox on Wednesday, April 9th, 2014. Then they play Friday, April 11th in Garretson at 7:00. Come out and Support the Orioles High School Baseball Team.

Lennox is Blown Away Offensively By Beresford in a Mercy Rule Game

Bersford vs Lennox

Lennox, SD     Wednesday, April 7th

The Orioles looked to continue there season off in the right direction. They were looking to do so on Wednesday night against the Beresford Watchdogs in Lennox. Nathan DeWitt was sent to pitch for the Orioles and he would pitch against Chris Kurpenske who was the pitcher for Beresford. After a line drive single by Kory Diefendorf (Beresford) in between 2nd and 1st Base, the Watchdogs started to roll. Nathan DeWitt struggled against the Watchdogs, DeWitt threw strikes but the Watchdogs just found some very nice hits. After scoring 8 runs in the top of the 1st for the Watchdogs the Orioles came to bat. Harrington managed a walk with 2 outs, but he could not be advanced. Nick Kayl then came in to pitch for the Orioles. Levi Buckenberg went into play right field and Jake Heisinger moved to Left Field during this pitching change. Nick Kayl threw 2 great innings in which he went 6 up and 6 down, meaning that he pitched to 6 batters and got all 6 out without one of them getting on base. However, the Orioles could not find any runs to score themselves. Nick Kayl ran into a little trouble as the Watchdogs started to get some hits. With 2 outs in the top of the 4th and the score 13 to 0, a ground ball was hit towards center that the shortstop, Jordon Harrington, tried to stop. Harrington ended up hurting his shoulder while diving and that caused him to be taken out of the game. So Oldenkamp was sent from catcher to shortstop. Brock Stein (Freshman) came in to play catcher. A few runs later it was 16 to 0 and still 2 outs in the top of 4th. That brought coach Rob Sweeter out to the mound and Nick Kayl was taken out. Preston Lauters came into pitch for Nick Kayl. Lauters threw 3 pitches, all of which were strikes and he got a strikeout to end the top of the 4th. The Orioles had to score at least 2 runs to keep playing. Jake Heisinger got on by an error by the 1st baseman. Then Delane Hood and Levi Buckneberg both worked the count the best they could but both of them struck out swinging. That brought up Grant Sweeter. Sweeter worked a walk to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Then Preston Lauters came up. Lauters hit a shallow fly ball to right field that was caught on the run by the right fielder to end the game. The Orioles had been Mercy Ruled 16 to 0 in 4 innings.

The Orioles lost and are now 1 and 1. They still recieved a solid pitching performance from Nick Kayl that silenced the powerful Beresford offense for 2 innings.

The Orioles will play the Garretson Blue Dragons on Friday, April 11th at 7:00. There is no JV game that day due to the lateness of the game start time. Then the Orioles will face the West Central Trojans on Sunday, April 13th at 4:00. Come out and Support the Lennox Orioles!!

The Orioles Have Defensive Struggles and Lose to Garretson

Lennox Orioles vs Garretson Blue Dragons

Garretson, SD    Friday, April 11th

The Orioles headed to Garretson this past Friday to face off against the Garretson Blue Dragons. Grant Sweeter was the starting pitcher and he had a little trouble but didn't pitch too bad. Aaron Dunn was the starting pitcher for the Blue Dragons.

In the top of the 1st Kayl grounded out followed by Cownie's strikeout, Oldenkamp's walk and Heisinger's strikeout. In the bottom of the first Sweeter got a groundout to Cownie. However an error by Cownie would allow Aaron Dunn to reach first base. Then Sweeter got a strikeout to make there 2 outs. However Jesse Brockhouse hit a RBI double to right center to make it 1 to 0 Garretson. Sweeter would then get a Fly out to Drew Mechels in Center.

The Orioles got 2 singles from DeWitt and Lauters in the top of the 2nd but nobody scored. Sweeter started off the bottom of the 2nd with 3 straight walks to load the bases. Cole Fiegen  hit an RBI bunt single to make it 2 to 0. Then Cownie fielded a ground ball and threw out the guy at home. That was followed by Sweeter's strike out and a fly out to Wallenstein in Right to end the inning. The Orioles would score a run off of an Error by Etrheim in Rightfield to make it 2 to 1. However in the bottom of the 3rd the Orioles defense struggled to make some plays. The inning started with an error and continued to head in the wrong direction. Sweeter gave up 3 hits in the inning and 2 walks to make it 5 to 0. However the Orioles ended up comitting a total of 4 errors in the 3rd inning and that cost them 11 unearned runs to make it 13 to 1. In the Top of the 5th Lauters reached on an Error and would score on a passed ball to make it 13 to 2. Brock Stein replaced Tyler Johnson at pitcher and Stein gave up 2 earned runs on 1 hit and 1 hit by pitch. That made it 16 to 2. The Orioles got a run from Devon Jongeling who walked and the got a passed ball to score. The final score was 16 to 3.

The Orioles have some positives from this game which are that the back-ups that came in did a good job by scoring 2 of the 3 runs that the Orioles had. The Orioles also recieved solid Pitching Performances from Tyler Johnson, Brock Stein and Grant Sweeter. There was only 3 earned runs so the Orioles pitching was pretty good.

The Orioles face the West Central Trojans on Sunday, April 13th at 4:00 to be followed by the game in Lennox vs Sioux Falls Christian on Monday, April 14th at 5:30. Come out and support the Orioles as they attempt to get win number 2 this season!

Lennox Pitchers Struggles in Loss to McCook Central

Lennox Orioles vs McCook Central

Salem, SD    Saturday, April 19th

1 inning can change the outcome of the game. One bad or good inning can make the difference between a win and a loss. The Orioles this season have in 2 games had that one bad inning that has made them lose. The McCook Central game had a similar outcome.

The 4th inning was very bad for the Orioles. McCook Central earned one infield hit to start the bottom of the 4th and that was all for hits. Harrington struggled to throw stikes and ended up walking 4 batters and hitting one batter with a pitch. Jordon managed to get 2 outs but he gave up 5 runs to make it 5 to 2. Oldenkamp finished the inning by getting a ground ball to Sweeter at 2nd for out number 3. Earlier in the game the Orioles scored two runs on 3 hits. It was the top of the 3rd and no one had scored yet. It started with Sweeter flying out to center. Then Brock Stien hit a single down the right field line. That was followed by Oldenkamps RBI double to left field. Delane Hood hit a single down the right field line after that and scored another run. So back to the 5th. The Orioles found no success in the last 3 innings and ended up getting 0 hits. The final score was 8 to 3.

The Orioles were thankful for a solid performance offensively by Brock Stien and John Oldenkamp. Stein had 2 singles and scored once. Oldenkamp had a RBI double and also scored once. The Orioles defense committed one error in the first but did not commit an error after that. The Orioles recieved good defensive perfromances from Brock Stien and Grant Sweeter. Stein caught all 7 innings and only allowed 2 passed balls. Sweeter made 6 defensive plays without having an error at 2nd base.

Canton Walks Past the Orioles in Mercy Rule Game

Canton C-Hawks vs Lennox Orioles

Lennox, SD    Monday, April 21st

Walks are a significant reason of how a team can win or lose a game. For the Orioles Pitching on Monday, that was the reason they lost. The Orioles threw too many walks and allowed the C-Hawks to walk past the Orioles. Literally, the C-Hawks earned most of their trips to first base by walks. The Orioles in the top of the 1st gave it all they had and loaded the bases but only scored 2. The rest of the game continued the same style. The Orioles walked men and then the defense made a few errors and then it was 17 to 3. The Orioles struggled a lot. They tried to score in the bottom of the 5th but couldn't bring any runs across.

The Orioles got a solid Offensive performance from John Oldenkamp, who had 2 singles and 4 stolen bases in the game. He also scored 2 times and accounted for 2 of the 3 Orioles runs. Defensively the Orioles were thankful for solid performances from Brock Stien and Grant Sweeter. Stien caught the whole game and allowed only 1 passed ball. Sweeter had 5 putouts accounting for a third of the defensive outs made by the Orioles.

The Orioles face off against the Quarriers from Dell Rapids on Wednesday. Come Out and Support your Lennox Orioles.

Orioles Bad Start Allows Dell Rapids to Win

Dell Rapids/ St. Marys/ Baltic vs Lennox Orioles

Lennox, SD    Wednesday, April 23rd

A bad start can definently affect how the ending of game happens. When the Orioles allowed 5 runs in the first two innings that set up the Orioles for a hard ending of the game. Nick Kayl pitched to 4 batters in the 2nd and allowed only 1 run to score. Then Nick Kayl struggled in the next inning and allowed 4 more runs to score. His arm started to hurt and so due to injury Grant Sweeter came into pitch. He ended up pitching the next 6 innings and only giving up 4 earned runs and 2 unearned runs. That made the score for Dell Rapids 11. Lennox would score 2 in the 4th and make the score 11 to 3 for the final.

The Orioles recieved a solid offensive performance from Travis Cownie and John Oldenkamp. Cownie had  a walk and a hit that scored a run. Oldenkamp had a double and an RBI single. The Orioles recived a solid performance defensively from Grant Sweeter, John Oldenkamp and Brock Stien. Brock Stien caught the whole game and had 0 passed balls. John Oldenkamp had 5 putouts in the game. Grant Sweeter pitched the last 6 innings and allowed 4 earned runs. He struck out 3 and only pitched 82 pitches.

Orioles Bad 3rd Inning allows Extra Runs to be Scored by Tea

Lennox Orioles vs Tea Area Titans

Tea, SD    Friday, April 25th

In previous recap stories, I have told how errors can lose a game. I have also told about how one bad inning can cause a team to lose the game. The Orioles had both of these. The Orioles in the 3rd inning had 4 errors and allowed 7 runs to score. But lets look back to how we got to this situation.

In the top of the 1st Lauters singled to start off. However afer a groundout, fielders choice and a flyout ended with 0 runs. Tea got 2 runners on but did not score. In the 2nd Brock Stien got a 2 out single but nobody score. Tea was held scoreless in the bottom of the 2nd. Sweeter singled but that was followed by a strikeout, fielders choice, and a groundout. In the bottom of the 3rd, 3 errors on Pitcher Jordon Harrington, and an error on the 3rd baseman Delane Hood started the inning off wrong. With a walk and 3 singles to go with the errors led to the a 7 run inning. Harrington started off the 4th inning with a lead off error. He got to first by an error on the short stop Jordan Fechner. 2 groundouts and a single from Brock Stien led to Harrington scoring. Harrington gave up 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th. In the top of the 5th, Sweeter singled and then lauters got on by a fielders choice. The Delane Hood singled. Heisinger then got on by an error that scored Lauters. It was now 12 to 2. DeWitt came into pitch and he gave up 2 earned runs in the 5th. Then the Orioles got busy. Nate DeWitt led off with a single. Mechels followed with a single. Then Stien hit a RBI single. Nick Kayl then hit a 2 run double to left center to score 2. Followed by Sweeter's RBI single to make the score 10 to 6. Lauters then singled to score another. Hood earned a walk and Harrington did too. Mechels would score Lauters on a error that he got on. DeWitt allowed 4 runs in the top of the 5th. The score was now 16 to 8. Kayl struck out to lead off the inning. Sweeter then walked and Lauters got on by an error. Hood walked and Heisinger got hit by pitch. Harrington then got hit by pitch and the bases were loaded with 1 out. DeWitt earned a walk to make the score 16 to 11 with 1 out. However Mechels struck out and Stien flew out to make the final score 16 to 11.

The Orioles were thankful for strong defensive performances from Nate DeWitt at first who didn't have an error and was involved in multiple plays. Offensively the Orioles thank Grant Sweeter, Drew Mechels, and Brock Stien. Sweeter had 3 singles and Mechels had 2 singles. Stien also had 2 singles.

Orioles Offense Struggles; Loses to Tea

Tea Area Titans vs Lennox Orioles

Lennox, SD    Sunday, April 27th

The saying "defense wins championships," is most of the time true. Like when the Seahawks killed the Broncos in the 2014 Super Bowl. However in some games, Offense can be the deciding factor. On Sunday night the Lennox Orioles hosted the Tea Area Titans. The Titans started Troy Smith as the pitcher and Delane Hood was the pitcher for the Lennox Orioles.

In the top of the first the Titans scored on a signle from Carter Borhabaj. The Orioles answered in the bottom of the 1st. Cownie got out for out number 1. Then Hood earned a walk but was picked off second on Oldenkamps Fielder's choice. Then with 2 outs and a runner on 1st, Jake Heisinger hit a RBI triple to the right field fence. That made the score 1 to 1. In the top of the 2nd Hood got a flyout and 2 strikeouts to go 3 up and 3 down. Then Mechels earned a walk and so did Nick Kayl. That would put runners on the corners. On an attempt to get Kayl stealing at 2nd, the pitcher threw into center field and Mechels scored to make it 2 to 1 Lennox. However the Titans loaded the bases and scored a run in the 4th. That was followed by a 3 RBI double by Taylor Roemen. That made the score 6 to 2. In the 6th Hood gave up 2 runs and then hit the 106 pitch mark which means he has to come out. That brought Grant Sweeter to pitch. Sweeter walked the first guy and then got a groundout. Taylor Roemen came into pitch in the 6th. He struck out 2 of 3 batters. In the top of the 7th, Sweeter got 2 flyouts and a groundout to go 3 up 3 down. The Orioles got 2 guys on base but they did not score anything and the final was 8 to 2.

The Orioles recieved solid defensive performances from John Oldenkamp, Jordon Harrington, Delane Hood and Grant Sweeter. Hood and Sweeter combined, pitched the whole game and only gave up 7 earned runs. Harrington had 5 putouts without having an error. Oldenkamp had 4 putouts and 0 errors. The Orioles got good offensive performances from Jake Heisinger, Brock Stien and Delane Hood. Heisinger had an RBI triple. Stien had a double and a walk. Delane Hood walked 3 times and flew out the other time.

Orioles' Errors and Bad 5th Inning; Allows Canton to Win

Lennox Orioles at Canton C-Hawks

Canton, SD    Saturday, May 3rd

In the past, I have talked about how important Defense is to a baseball team. Many people say "Defense wins champioships." The Orioles on Saturday took on the Canton C-Hawks and the Defense for the Orioles struggled a little. The Orioles started Braedon Wallenstein (freshman) and the Canton C-Hawks started Jack Beachler. This was Braedon Wallenstein first start as a pitcher in the Varsity games. He threw outstading and gave up 0 runs after 4 innings. In the top of the 1st, Preston Lauters singled to right field to start it off. Then a stolen base by Lauters and two ground outs, advanced Lauters to third base. Then Nathan DeWitt hit a single to left to make it 1 to 0. So after 4, the score was 1 to 0. However in the bottom of the 5th, the C-Hawks found the hits and walks and scored 7. It was 7 to 1 after 5. Sweeter came in to pitch for Wallenstein in the 5th and Sweeter got the final out. The Orioles were held scoreless in the 6th. Canton had 2 hits and Lennox had 3 Errors in the bottom of the 6th and scored 4 runs. Then the Final Score was 11 to 1. The Orioles had lost due to the 10 Run Rule after 5 innings. The Orioles were led offensively by Travis Cownie, Nathan DeWitt, and Preston Lauters. Lauters had a single and scored once. DeWitt had an RBI single and Cownie had 2 singles on the day. Defensively, the Orioles were thankful for Braedon Wallenstein and Grant Sweeter's performance. Sweeter had 3 putouts at 2nd base and no errors. Sweeter also pitched 1 inning and allowed 0 earned runs. Wallenstein pitched 4.66 solid inning and allowed only 4 earned runs.

Orioles Offense Derailed; Loses to #5 Team the in State

Lennox Orioles at West Central Trojans

Homboldt, SD    Sunday, May 4th

"To be On" is a saying used by mostly every baseball player. It is used to describe a player's performance during a game. Like if a pitcher has 10 strikeouts or if a batter hits 3 homeruns. When this saying is used, it means that the player is ON. Meaning he is having an outstanding game. Sometimes a player can be "Off" which simply means that they are not playing to their standards. On Sunday, May 4th the Orioles took on the number 5 team in the South Dakota State B Baseball League, the West Central Trojans. Delane Hood pitched for the Orioles and did a great job compared how great the Trojans are. Cole Rockafellow pitched for the Trojans and he was, as a baseball player would say, On. Now it didn't help that the Orioles Offense was, as a baseball player would say, Off. So with Rockafellow pitching well and the Orioles offense struggling, this set up for a bad match-up.

For the Orioles Offense, the first 8 batters got out. The first 6 batters struck out. Then Grant Sweeter came up with 2 outs in the bottom of the 3rd. After looking at two strikes, Sweeter watched 4 balls go by and he walked. Then Mechels grounded out to 2nd. However, West Central scored 1 in the first and 2 in the second. They also added 4 in the 3rd on a Double. After 3 innings it was 7 to 0. With 1 out in the 4th, Heisinger singled to right. Then DeWitt doubled over the left fielders head to put runners on 2nd and 3rd base with 1 out. Then Cownie struck out and Kayl grounded out and the Orioles were held scoreless. However, Hood went 3 up and 3 down in the bottom of the 4th. It was 7 to 0 after 4 Innings. The Orioles did not score in the 5th and since Hood had pitched 90 pitches, he had to come out. DeWitt came in to pitch and he got 2 strikeouts. That was followed by 2 walks and 3 singles to score 3 runs and make the score 10 to 0. That means that Lennox lost due to the 10 run rule after 5 innings.

The Orioles appreciated the defensive performances from Hood and Mechels. Hood only allowed 2 earned runs in 4 innings of pitching. Mechels had 4 fly balls that he caught out in center field.

That was the final season game for the Lennox Orioles. They now move onto the Playoffs where they will play Canton in Canton at 6:00 on Tuesday, May 11th. http://challonge.com/Region3B is the website to see the bracket for the Tournament in District 3B South.

Orioles Lose in Playoffs in a Close Game; Ends Season

Lennox Orioles vs Canton C-Hawks

Canton, South Dakota    Tuesday, May 13th

From the first pitch to the last pitch, a team needs to be in the game and ready for anything to happen. If a team is always ready to play whatever happens and is making plays, then that team has a good chance of winning. The Orioles showed up, ready to play on Tuesday. However, Canton showed up ready to play as well. The Orioles called upon Delane Hood to be the starting pitcher. Jack Beachler was the starter for the Canton C-Hawks. The Orioles went 3 up 3 down in the top of the 1st. When Hood took the mound, he gave up a ground ball to Peterson and then gave up a single to Ablett. Ablett would then steal 2nd. That was followed by Carter Dahl's single to left to score Ablett and make it 1 to 0. In the top of the 2nd the Orioles went down in order again. However, Hood allowed 1 man to get on, but they didn't score. In the top of the 3rd, Kayl worked a one out walk. He then got to second on a wild throw by the pitcher. Now with 2 outs, Oldenkamp would hit a bloop single behind the third baseman. Kayl would score. Then another wild throw by the pitcher got Oldenkamp to third. Then Dahl's throw from first was over the third basemans head and so Oldenkamp took for home. However, Jordan Sehr's throw was perfect and a quite questionable call by the Umpire made Oldenkamp out at home. In the bottom of the 3rd, Hood gave up 0 runs. Then in the bottom 4th, Canton earned 3 runs off of  Hood. That made the score 4 to 1. The Orioles answered. To begin the 5th, Mechels earned a walk. Followed by Stien's single to right-center field. Then Kayl earned a walk to load the bases for Grant Sweeter. Sweeter worked the count. It was 3-2 and Sweeter watched ball 4 go by. It was a RBI walk to make it 4 to 2. Then Oldenkamp hit a deep fly to left, it was caught by Jordan Sehr for Out number 2. However, Lauters would score from 3rd to make it 4 to 3. Canton answered with 1 run in the 5th to make it 5 to 3 Canton. With a runner on 3rd and a runner on 2nd. Brock Stien came up and ended up striking out. That was followed by Nick Kayl. There was two outs and he wanted to get a hit. He ended up working to a full count. He then watched strike 3 go by for out number 3. Then the Orioles defense got in trouble. With 1 out, Canton had runners on 2nd and 3rd. Chase Bietzel would hit a ground ball to Sweeter at 2nd. Sweeter then looked the runners back to base and threw Bietzel out at 1st. With 2 outs, Harrington got a backwards strikeout on Brian Jennings to end the 6th. Sweeter was up in the top of the 7th. He started off well. He earned a walk to get the tying run to the plate. Oldenkamp would also earn a walk. That brought Hood to the plate and Carter Dahl to the pitcher's mound. Hood would strike out and Heisinger came up. Heisinger would walk to load the bases with 1 outs. DeWitt would also strikeout. Harrington came up. He worked the count well and with a 1-2 count he hit a deep shot down the left field line. However, it landed 3 feet foul. He would strikeout on the next pitch. The Orioles season was over.

The Orioles would like to thank Travis Cownie, Jordon Harrington, and Drew Mechels for their 4 years of dedication and effort to the Lennox Orioles High School Baseball Team. The Orioles would also like to thank the following players for their great defensive performance last night. Delane Hood and Jordon Harrington combined to give up only 5 earned runs. Oldenkamp also had 4 putouts and a good defensive game. Offensively, the Orioles got good performances from John Oldenkamp, Brock Stien, Grant Sweeter, and Nick Kayl.

Lennox at Sioux Falls Christian

Tea, SD

This past Tuesday (April, 30th), the Lennox Orioles varsity team traveled to the ball park in Tea to play Sioux Falls Christian Chargers. The starting pitcher for the Chargers was Nick Stern. He was a fast pitcher with a little bit of a breaking ball. Most of the Oriole hitters struggled with hitting.

Here's the break down, Top of the 7th score Chargers 3, Lennox 2. This was the last chance for the Orioles. Delane Hood struck out to lead off the inning. Patrick Konda (a 4 year player and starting right fielder) got a walk to put the tying run on first base. Then Derek DeWitt worked the count to find a 1-2 pitch that he hit down the line in left for a double. Due to the threat of a catch Patrick Konda had to hold up between first and second so he could only get to 3rd base. With 1 outs there were 2 in scoring position. Drew Mechels went down on strikes for out 2. Jordan Gesling would work the count for a walk and load the bases up with 2 outs. That would bring up Travis Cownie.
