Orioles Finish March Like a Lion
Posted April 2, 2018
With March going out like a lamb, it opened the opportunity for High school baseball! Lennox took the warm weather and rode it all the way to Rapid City!
Along with the weather, Lennox brought some warm bats as they ignited to a 21-7 Victory over Douglas in game one on the 24th and an 8-2 win over Rapid City Stevens in game two.
Against Douglas, walks and 15 Lennox hits fueled the 21 runs including three hits each from Quincy Ihnen, Holden Wagner and JD Kirchner. Pitching was a little off but still solid in the 5 inning route of Douglas.
Rapid City Stevens would put up more of a fight jumping out to a 1-0 lead, but Lennox chased the first pitcher out of the game and that sparked an 8 run turnaround leading to the 8-2 win.
Lennox would play St Thomas More on Sunday the 25th as the final game in Rapid. This game had some pregame hype that wasn’t lived up to. After STM took a 5-4 lead in the 2nd, Lennox scored 15 runs in the next threes innings, on their way to a 19-6 victory. It was an undefeated weekend!
“Our focus was there and the boys knew the goal was to go undefeated this weekend,” Head Coach Drew Sweeter says. “Our pitching and defense struggled at times, but our offense carried us to three impressive wins.”
On March 29th, Lennox hosted a really tough Dell Rapids team. Half way through the game, Juniors Brock Anderson and Quincy Ihnen would hit back to back doubles to open a 1-0 Lennox lead. However, a two run top of the 7th for Dell Rapids would eventually be the deciding point as Lennox lost 2-1.
“While it hurts to lose, we will use this game as a teaching moment and that will make us better down the road,” Drew Sweeter says.
Wrapping up March with a home game, Lennox played Garretson on March 30th. In the first, Junior JD Kirchner roped a 2 RBI single to open a 2-0 Lennox lead. After four scoreless innings, Lennox rallied for a 7 run bottom of the sixth to blow open a 9-0 lead including a nice 2 RBI single from Junior Ray Williams! On the pitching side, Junior Camden Wulf work 5 scoreless innings and another junior Holden Wagner would allow one run in his two innings of work leading to a 9-1 Lennox win.
“It was nice to win some games in March, but it is time for the busiest month of the year. April is always tough but I know the boys are ready for it,” Drew Sweeter says.
Despite some colder weather, Lennox was able to get hot and start the season with four wins and one loss. Lennox is supposed to host Sioux Falls Christian on April 4th but the weather may play a role in that happening.
