Mudhens rally to beat Granite; lose to Yankees, again!

A three-run rally in the eighth inning gave Minneota a 5-3 lead over Granite Falls Wednesday night.

As they were trying to rally again with two men on in the ninth, the rains came and stopped the game — giving the Mudhens a 5-3 victory.

The Kilos had seven errors — four during the eighth inning rally. The big blows were a run-scoring single by Danny Hennen and a run-scoring double by Tyson Sonnenburg.

Minneota took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Beau Buysse single, Jake Leighton doubled — Granite committed an error and Sonnenburg’s groundout scored the second run.

On the mound, Zach Nuy had control for five innings. He had given up just three hits — all in the fourth when Granite scored a run. And he fanned six batters. But he ran into trouble in the sixth. Danny Hennen pitched the rest of the way, struck out four and picked up the win.

For the second time in two weeks, the highly-regarded Milroy Yankees took a one-run game from the Minneota Mudhens.

The Mother's Day late-afternoon classic went to the home team, 5-4.

The Mudhens had trouble hitting the Yankees highly-regard hurler Nathan Deutz. He gave up just one hit and left the game after five innings with the contest tied, 1-1.

A four-run rally by Milroy in the seventh broke a 1-1 tie. Fighting back from the 5-1 deficit, the Mudhens rallied in the ninth inning for five hits to score three runs against Deutz's brother Austin Deutz. The tying and going-ahead runs were on base but Deutz got Jordan Beck to ground out to preserve the Milroy victory.

In the ninth, Noah Scott got a hit, Austin Buysse his second of the game, Drew Fadness a pinch-hit single, Danny Hennen a hit and Peyton Nuy a single as the Mudhens rallied, but it fell short.

Minneota did turn three double plays, all going through second baseman Beau Buysse.

Jake Leighton pitched seven innings and took the loss with Bryce Gorder in relief for the Mudhens. Leighton took the loss.

Nathan Deutz fanned eight Mudhens and picked up the win.

Dylan Criquett-Danielson collected a pair of hits for the Yankees.

Minneota is now 3-2 on the year, with both losses to the Yankees. The game Wednesday at home against the Granite Falls Kilowatts has been called off because the lights are not working on the field. They play at 7:30 p.m. Friday night at home against Morris.
