MacTavish off mat-leave, picks up W in debut

When Pam MacTavish showed up in uniform for the Camrose Roadrunner’s game in Heisler over the weekend at the Cardinals’ annual baseball tournament, spectators might have glanced her way because it’s rare to see a woman, playing in the Battle River or Powerline Baseball League.

But even her teammates might have been a little surprised to see her ready to play – just six weeks after she gave birth to her baby boy Reicher. Proud papa Tim MacTavish was away fishing. 

He would miss an amazing feat.

Pam not only played, but was asked to pitch. And pitch she did. Striking out six and going four complete until little Reicher got hungry.

Now, the Maidstone, Sask., boys were a little under-the-weather so to speak, and they didn’t have their regular lineup, but Pam’s victory on Sunday afternoon, which helped launch the Roadrunners into the B-Final was on another level of legendary PBL moments.

Upon hearing the news, it was reported husband Tim, a fellow Roadrunner himself, was in shock. First wondering if she had played, but then learning she was the starting pitcher.

”What!?” exclaimed Tim on the phone. “She pitched?”

That she did. Thus making me feel not much better about my aching arm and body when I pitch, and giving all other females, a little, wo-man-up session for the weekend.

”You feel bad for complaining about hurting after pitching?” my wife said. “How about me? I didn’t move for six weeks let alone play baseball and pitch!”
