Growing together as a team
By BUDDY HUGHES The Brunswick News
The purpose of a football team is to bring together a group of strangers, blend older veterans with young rookies into a cohesive unit and achieve the goal of winning a championship.
The Glynn County Revolution semipro football team is no different.
After splitting their first two games of the season, the Revolution have won five straight games and are climbing the ranks of the National Independent Football League standings.
“It’s going well right now,” defensive lineman Cameron Waters said. “The team is sticking together.”
In their final home game of the season Saturday, Glynn County routed the South Georgia Rattlers 48-6.
One of the reasons the Revolution have been successful has been the play of running back Bill Arnett. The 30-year-old Brunswick resident is the oldest member of the squad, but has shown fresh legs to give a nice lift to the Revolution’s rushing attack.
“It’s going great,” Arnett said. “I’m enjoying it, and we’re getting better every week.” Being the oldest member of the team has its advantages for Arnett.
“I’m able to give advice to other guys,” Arnett said. “They don’t get on me.”
Arnett, who played high school football at Brunswick High, stayed in shape in the time between his high school glory days and donning the orange jersey of the Revolution. That work ethic has helped him become a mainstay in the Revolution’s offense.
“I take care of myself,” Arnett said. “I work out and kept myself in pretty good shape before I started playing again.”
Waters is on the other end of the age spectrum. He and Max Gibbs, both just 19, are the youngest members of the Revolution.
Waters said it is no deal being the team’s youngest player.
“Not as much as you would think,” Waters said. “In high school when you’re a sophomore, you’re looking at all the juniors and seniors like grown men. Now, you’re looking at grown men.”

The same way Arnett does not get teased for his being the oldest, Waters is also immune to any age-related jokes.
He does, however, get teased for his stature.
“I get flack for being small, but not for (my age),” said Waters, who played at Glynn Academy.
Such good-natured ribbing goes a long way in helping establish a bond between players. Getting a chance to play and win with a bunch of guys who play because they love the game makes the experience more special for Waters.
“I love to do it and playing with these guys is special because they’re having fun, too,” said Waters, whose father Jeffrey is the driving force behind the Revolution.
“It doesn’t feel like work. We’re actually playing a game now (at practice).”
To achieve their goals this season, the Revolution have one roadblock in their way. The Georgia
Firebirds, the defending NIFL Georgia champions, are the only team to hang a loss on the
Revolution this year, a 21-6 defeat at the North Glynn Recreation Complex on Feb. 6.
The two teams meet in Tifton on Saturday with first place in the NIFL’s NFC conference up for grabs.
Arnett said the team needs to keep doing what has worked during their five-game winning streak to close the season strong.
“We need to continue to win, play as a team and everything else will fall into place,” Arnett said.
The regional playoffs for the NIFL are set for April 24 with the conference championship scheduled for May 1.
