Chuckers Open 2013 with a Pair of Walk-Off Wins
Posted April 7, 2013
The Red Eagles, coming off a shaky ice-breaker performance the week before, proved worthy opponents, forcing the favored Chuckers to extra innings in both the morning and afternoon games. Coached by former Richmond assistant coach, Jay Longpre, the young Red Eagles played well. Despite being out hit by a wide margin, Victoria kept the veteran Richmond squad in check with excellent pitching and defense.
Game one ended 5-4 for the locals when Isaiah Hayes capped an 8th inning rally with a clean base hit to left to plate Tyler Hoefer. Hoefer was excellent in the start, striking out 10 over four innings of mound work. Ryder Mavis picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief work. Noah Or led the offense with a 3-hit effort (2x2B, 3B), while Spencer Rankin, Mitchell Rennie and Hayes had multi-hit games.
Game two also went to 8 innings to be settled, this time when Marc Ashford's long double scored Or from first base with the walk-off run. Or, Ashford, Rennie, and Rankin all had multi-hit efforts, while Hayes, James Hardy and Mackenzie Marquis (W) shared the mound work.
37 league games remain, with lot's of room for improvement, but two walk-off, extra inning wins is certainly a nice way to start any season.
