The past three league games for the St. Peter town team have all been decided in the ninth inning. Unfortunately for the Saints, only one of those outcomes has been in their favor. The local nine traveled to Chanhassen on Thursday night and came out on the wrong end of a walk-off hit, losing 4-3 in a Region 6C seeding game.
The Saints are now 5-6 in the River Valley League West and still hold onto the No. 2 seed with two games to play. They journey to first place Gaylord on Friday (7:30 p.m.) with a lot on the line. For St. Peter to earn the No. 1 seed, they need to defeat Gaylord by four or more runs (to earn the tiebreaker) and then defeat Henderson on Sunday (4 p.m.) while Gaylord’s last home game vs. Chanhassen would need to be a loss.
Against Chanhassen, the Saints lit up the scoreboard in the first inning with a two-out rally. Jesse Munsterman doubled and was driven home by a Shea Roehrkasse single.
Chanhassen answered in the second with two runs on three hits and a hit-batsman. The Red Birds then increased their lead to 3-1 in the fifth on two singles and a sacrifice.
The St. Peter bats found their stroke again in the seventh to tie the game at 3-3. Roehrkasse led off with a double, Ryan Wenner walked and Mike Enz ensued with a sacrifice bunt to put both runners in scoring position. Ben Mikelson then hit a groundout to short, scoring Roehrkasse. Jeff Menk answered with an RBI single, but the Saints stranded runners on first and second to end the threat.
Pitching the entire game for the Saints was Jordan Seebach and unfortunately his offense couldn’t provide much run support to back his exceptional performance on the mound. Chanhassen was able to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth after a leadoff double, hit-by-pitch and single loaded the bases. The following batter hit a short fly-ball to right field, where the only error of the game occurred and the Red Birds crossed home to wrap it up.
Seebach allowed three earned runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
Roehrkasse led the Saints at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, run and an RBI. CJ Siewert (1-2, BB), Menk (1-3, RBI) and Munsterman (1-4, 2B, R) had the remaining hits.
