Saints end season with tough 11-3 loss at top-ranked Jordan

By CJ Siewert

Allowing 34 hits in its two playoff games isn’t exactly what the St. Peter town team had in mind when aspiring to garner its first State Tournament appearance since 2010. But lackluster pitching performances paired with limited offensive production spelled out a season-ending 11-3 loss at top-ranked Jordan Sunday evening.

The Saints finish their 2013 campaign with a 10-17 overall record and 7-6 mark in the River Valley League.

Hopes of coming away with a victory at the Mini Met in Jordan ran high early in the ballgame as Jesse Munsterman belted a solo home run over the left field wall and onto Rice Street, giving the Saints a 1-0 lead after the first half inning. But the tides quickly turned in favor of the Brewers as they answered with five runs on five hits, a hit-batsman and a sacrifice off starter Jordan Seebach in the bottom half.

In the third inning, Jordan loaded the bases with no outs to end Seebach’s day on the hill. Jeremy Braun came in and limited the damage with a double play and fly-out, leaving the frame with a 6-1 deficit. But more damage was done in the fourth as Braun allowed three runs (two earned) on four consecutive singles and an error for a 9-1 deficit.

With plenty of game left, the Saints picked away at the lead in the sixth inning. CJ Siewert started the frame with a single, backed by two more singles from Jordan Wilmes and Billy Hanson to load the bases. Munsterman then lined a single to right field for two runs. But three consecutive fly-outs to center field stranded two runners on base and ended the only rally St. Peter managed all game.

Jordan got one run back immediately in the bottom half with three more singles. Braun left the game with one out in the sixth, giving way to Jesse Anderson.

Another Brewer run was scored in the seventh for an 11-3 lead, which would remain for the final score.

Seebach took the loss after two innings of work. He allowed six runs on seven hits. Braun tossed three and one-third innings of relief with three earned runs on seven hits and three strikeouts. Anderson pitched the final two and two-thirds with one run on four hits and a strikeout.

Munsterman (2-4, HR, 3 RBI, R), Jeff Menk (2-4), Wilmes (2-5, R) and Hanson (2-5) all contributed a pair of hits each. Siewert (1-2, R) and Mikelson (1-4) had the other hits.
