Town team sinks Islanders 12-3

By CJ Siewert

The St. Peter amateur baseball club got back to its winning ways Tuesday night at Veterans Field, beating River Valley League West rival Gaylord 12-3.

The win moved the Saints into first place in the West division with a 5-1 league record, while the Islanders drop to second with a 2-1 mark.

After two scoreless innings, Gaylord got on the board first with a run in the third inning on a single, stolen base and an RBI single.

The Saints quickly responded in the bottom half with four runs, which proved to be enough for the win. Nate Wenner led off with a double and scored two batters later on a fielder’s choice by Sam Wenner. After stealing second base, Sam Wenner then scored on a single by Shea Roehrkasse. Seth Wenner then walked and Ryan Wenner singled to score Roehrkasse. With runners on the corners and CJ Siewert at the plate, a balk was called to score Seth Wenner from third for the fourth run of the frame.

Gaylord answered with one unearned run the in the fourth after two singles and a fielding error.

Once again, St. Peter immediately responded in the bottom half – this time with two runs. Jeff Menk singled and scored three batters later as Sam Wenner reached on an error. Sam Wenner then scored on a single by Billy Hanson.

The Saints added a pair of runs in the sixth as Ty Kaus singled, stole second and scored on a single by Sam Wenner. Two batters later, Roehrkasse hit a double to score Sam Wenner.

The Islanders scored their third and final run of the game in the seventh inning as St. Peter starting pitcher Matt Lewis began to fatigue. A hit-by-pitch, stolen base and a double scored the run, but Lewis got out of the inning with consecutive strikeouts.

Lewis improved to 2-0 on the season after seven innings of work. The Saints’ ace allowed two earned runs on six hits with nine strikeouts, two walks and three hit batsmen.

St. Peter piled on three more runs in the seventh. Ryan Wenner was beaned, Ryan Kapsner singled and Menk sacrificed the runners into scoring position with a bunt. Kaus followed with a walk to load the bases and Tyler Stoffel got an easy RBI with a walk. That scenario played out twice more as Hanson and Roehrkasse each tallied an RBI with bases-loaded walks.

The final run of the game came in the eighth as Kapsner singled and later scored on single by Kaus.

Jeff Wenner pitched the eighth and ninth innings. He faced the minimum with two strikeouts and a double play.

Roehrkasse (2-4, R, BB, 2B, 2 RBI), Ryan Wenner (2-4, R, RBI, HBP), Kapsner (2-3, 2 R) and Kaus (2-3, 2 R, BB, SB, RBI) led the Saints at the plate.

St. Peter (7-6 overall) travels to Shakopee on Friday night for a 7:30 p.m. game. The Saints then journey north 10 miles on Hwy. 169 to take on the Le Sueur Braves 4 p.m. Sunday.
