Saints split the weekend, lose at Shakopee, beat Le Sueur

By CJ Siewert

Facing a pair of River Valley League opponents over the weekend, the St. Peter town team managed a split, losing 9-4 at Shakopee Friday night followed by a 7-4 win at Le Sueur Sunday afternoon.

The loss against Shakopee does not count against the Saints’ league standing since the Indians are Class B, but the win against the Braves improves STP’s league record to 6-1, which is good for first place and a two-game lead in the RVL West.

On Friday night in Shakopee, the Saints gave up four runs in the first three innings and were never able to crawl out of the hole. They made it close in the fifth with three runs to cut the deficit to 4-3.

Jeff Menk singled, Nate Wenner sacrificed Menk up a bag and was then driven home on a double by Ryan Kapsner. Shea Roehrkasse ensued with a monster home run over the left-center field wall – marking the team’s first home run of the season in 582 plate appearances.

But the Indians responded in the bottom half with two more runs to increase the lead to 6-3.

Jeff Wenner lasted five innings on the hill for the Saints, allowing five earned runs on eight hits with no strikeouts and one walk.

Jeremy Braun relieved Wenner for the sixth, but left the game after six batters with a shoulder injury. Braun surrendered two runs on two hits and two walks.

Manager Tom Lacina then took the mound on short notice and was able to get out of the inning with no further damage.

Lacina finished the game, pitching two and one-third innings without allowing an earned run (one unearned) on one hit. He also struck out one.

St. Peter’s fourth run of the game occurred in the seventh frame as Nate Wenner walked, followed by consecutive singles off the bats of Kapsner and Roehrkasse.

Kapsner was perfect at the plate, reaching base all five times. He went 3-for-3 with two walks, a double, an RBI and a run.

Roehrkasse (2-5, HR, 3 RBI), Hanson (2-5) and Menk (2-4, R) also had multiple hits.

On Sunday in Le Sueur, the Saints struck first in the opening frame and never looked back.

Sam Wenner singled with one out, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. He then scored on a fielding error.

St. Peter increased its lead to 5-0 with four runs in the fourth inning. Ryan Wenner doubled, Menk singled and Seth Wenner doubled to score his cousin from third base. Jayme Munsterman followed with an RBI single to score Menk and Seth Wenner. He reached second on the throw to home and later scored on a single off the bat of Ty Kaus.

After cruising through the first four innings without a run, St. Peter starting pitcher Kaus gave up four in the fifth on four hits and a hit-by-pitch.

After a half-hour rain delay, play resumed with one out in the top of the fifth with the Saints leading 5-4.

Neither team was able to plate a run until the Saints added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Tyler Stoffel and Kaus led the frame off with consecutive singles followed by a sac bunt by Sam Wenner and then an intentional walk to Roehrkasse to load the bases. Hanson then hit a flare just over the first baseman’s head to score Stoffel and on a throwing error, Kaus was able to cross home for the second run of the inning.

Jesse Anderson pitched the last four innings for the Saints. The right hander didn’t allow a run and gave three hits.

Sam Wenner led the hit parade for the local nine, going 3-for-4 with a sacrifice, a run, and a stolen base.

The Saints collected 15 hits on the day.

St. Peter (8-7 overall) travels to New Um Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. tilt against the Kaiserhoff.
