Saints lose to No. 5-ranked Shakopee, beat Sleepy Eye in extras

The St. Peter town team lost a 7-1 decision to Class B No. 5-ranked Shakopee on May 24. Two big innings by the visitors proved to be the difference as the Indians scored three runs in the fourth and four in the sixth. The Saints scored their lone run in the ninth as Jordan Grams singled and scored on a double off the bat of Jordan Wilmes.
Luke Schwarz suffered the loss after five and one-third innings of work. He allowed six earned runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Mike Enz (2-5) and Grams (2-3, R) led the Saints at the place with a pair of hits each.

After a week off, the local nine rebounded with a 5-4 extra inning victory over Sleepy Eye in a non-league game. The Indians jumped out to a 4-1 lead after three innings, but the St. Peter pitching staff tossed seven straight scoreless innings while the offense added two runs in the seventh, one in the eighth, and the game winner in the tenth.
All four of Sleepy Eye’s runs were unearned as the Saints defense committed three errors in the first three frames. Alex Klug left the mound after five innings of work. He allowed four hits, struck out one, and walked two. Left-hander Jeremy Braun came in relief and pitched two scoreless innings.
St. Peter rallied in the seventh with two runs to make it a one-run deficit. Schwarz and Seth Wenner led off the frame with consecutive doubles for the first run, and the second came as Wilmes singled and Wenner scored on an error. The Saints tied the game in the eighth as Billy Hanson led off with a single, went first-to-third on a failed pick-off attempt, and scored on a single by Schwarz.
After a scoreless ninth, the hometown nine put runners on second and third base with one out as Seth Wenner singled and Wilmes reached on an error. With the infield in, Sam Wenner drove in his brother for the winning run on an infield hit.
Jesse Anderson earned the win after three innings of scoreless relief. He faced the minimum with five strikeouts. Seth Wenner led the team at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two runs, a double, and two RBI. St. Peter connected for a season-high 15 hits.
The Saints now host Fairfax for their first RVL West contest of the season at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
