ST. PETER, Minn. - The St. Peter town team used a late-inning rally to erase an early deficit Tuesday at Veterans Field, defeating Arlington 8-3. The Saints scored two runs in the seventh inning and exploded for six runs in the eighth for a key River Valley League victory. The win moves the Saints into second place in the league standings at 6-2 and they are now 9-5 overall, having won five straight RVL games and seven of their last eight overall.
Alex Klug struggled to find a rhythm in the first frame, allowing three runs on two hits, a walk, passed ball, and a hit-by-pitch. Klug then settled in and pitched five scoreless innings. He left after the sixth, having struck out eight and giving up five hits.
The local nine also struggled to find their bats throughout the first six innings, but in the seventh they were able to plate a couple runs to make it a one-run deficit. Jordan Wilmes doubled and scored on another double off the bat of Shea Roehkasse. Jovan Rodriquez, who walked, then scored on an error.
With two outs in the eighth inning, the Saints opened the floodgates with six runs. The game-tying run was scored by Ryan Kapsner on a passed ball. With the bases loaded, Roehrkasse hit a bases clearing single, which skipped past the left fielder allowing him to go to second base. Roehrkasse then scored on a double by Seth Wenner, who then scored on a single by Jeff Menk.
Jesse Anderson earned the win in relief. Anderson tossed the final three frames, giving up two hits and striking out two.
Wilmes led the Saints at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a run, two doubles, and two stolen bases. After 14 games, Wilmes is the team’s leading hitter with a .432 batting average.
St. Peter travels to Victoria, a perennial Class B power, on Thursday before taking the holiday weekend off.
