Saints hit minor skid, bounce back against Fairfax

By CJ Siewert

After going on a 10-game win streak, the St. Peter town team was in position to take the top spot in the River Valley League last Thursday against league-favorite Jordan, but the Saints lost a close 2-0 decision to the No. 9-ranked team in the state, followed by an uncharacteristic 12-5 loss at Gaylord on Sunday. St. Peter rounded out the regular season RVL schedule Monday with a 14-12 win against Fairfax at Veterans Field, finishing 12-4 in the league and claiming the No. 2 seed for Region 6C Playoffs, which begin Friday Aug. 5 in St. Peter.

St. Peter 0, Jordan 2

The visiting Brewers avenged a 4-2 loss on June 26 and split the regular season series by shutting out the Saints. Jordan scored one run in the first and another in the seventh, and the pitching combination of starter Mitch Bockenstedt and reliever Trent Bohnsack kept the St. Peter bats at bay.

The Saints threatened in the first, fourth, sixth, and eighth innings with runners in scoring position, but were unable to get the clutch hit. Luke Schwarz suffered the loss after seven innings or work. He allowed two runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts. Jesse Anderson tossed the final two innings and gave up just two hits with a pair of strikeouts. The St. Peter offense was limited to six hits.

St. Peter 5, Gaylord 12

The Saints suffered a hangover from Thursday’s close loss to Jordan, resulting in a decisive loss at Gaylord’s Walsh Field. The St. Peter pitching staff allowed a season-high 12 runs and 19 hits in the defeat.

The Islanders scored six runs in the second, two in the third, and added single runs in the next four frames. The Saints scored three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth, but couldn’t rally from the large deficit.

Jeff Wenner suffered his first loss of the season after going an inning-and-a-third. He gave up six runs (two earned) on five hits. Anderson pitched five and two-thirds innings of relief, allowing six runs on 14 hits. Jeremy Braun tossed a one-two-three eighth inning.

Billy Hanson (2-3, R, BB, RBI) and Seth Wenner (2-4, R, 2B, RBI) led the team at the plate.

St. Peter 14, Fairfax 12

The Saints rounded out their league schedule with an offensive battle against Fairfax. St. Peter led 13-5 after six innings, but the Cardinals wouldn’t go quietly and scored five runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to make it a one-run game. The Saints added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth and shut down another rally in the ninth to hold on for the win.

Alex Klug started on the mound and lasted two innings after having control issues. Jeff Wenner came in relief and earned the win after five innings of work. He allowed six runs (two earned) on seven hits, three strikeouts, and two walks. Jesse Anderson, on his 38th birthday, earned the two-inning save.

Five Saints produced multiple hits - Hanson (2-6, 2 RBI), Jeff Menk (2-4, R,BB, 2 RBI), Jayme Munsterman (2-3, 3 R, 2 BB), Nate Wenner (2-5, 2 R, RBI), and Jordan Wilmes (2-3, 2 R, BB, RBI).

St. Peter (16-7) hosts the New Ulm Brewers at 7:30 p.m. tonight (July 26) in a non-league game.
