Saints Split Pair Of League Games

ST. PETER, Minn. – The St. Peter town team split a pair of River Valley League games over the weekend. The Saints’ unbeaten streak in the league came to an end Friday in Le Sueur as they lost 7-2 before rebounding Sunday at Veterans Field with a 5-3 win over Gaylord. The Saints also hosted Class B Prior Lake on Thursday and lost 7-4. St. Peter is now 11-6 overall and 7-1 in the RVL, putting it in sole possession of first place in the league.

On Thursday, Prior Lake held a 4-0 lead midway through six innings until the Saints scored two runs the bottom half as Nate Wenner and CJ Siewert hit RBI singles. The Jays increased their lead to 7-2 in the seventh, but St. Peter answered again with two in the bottom half. Steven Nessler and Jordan Wilmes both scored on wild pitches to make it a three-run game, but the local nine couldn’t complete the comeback.

Nessler led the team at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a run. Jeff Wenner suffered the loss after five innings on the mound.

On Friday in Le Sueur, the Saints took a 2-0 lead in the first inning but were held scoreless the rest of the way for their first loss in league play. Nessler and Ty Kaus had back-to-back hits to start the game and were knocked home by Jovan Rodriguez and Shea Roehrkasse. But that would be all the offense for the Saints as the Braves scored one in the third and five in the fourth to gain a lead they would not relinquish.

Nessler once again led the team at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a run. Cullen Bruce took the loss on the mound after three and two-thirds innings.

On Sunday at Veterans Field, the Saints snapped their two-game skid behind a complete game pitching performance by Luke Schwarz. He allowed three runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.

Gaylord took a 2-0 lead in the third before the Saints responded in the fourth with a pair of runs to tie the game. Rodriguez scored on a double by Roehrkasse, who later scored on a throw to first base following a bounced strikeout. St. Peter gained a 3-2 lead in the sixth as Ryan Kapsner doubled and scored on a sac fly by Rodriguez. Nessler gave the home team some breathing room in the seventh by knocking in a pair of runs to make it a 5-2 advantage. The Islanders made it interesting in the ninth by scoring a run and loading the bases with just one out, but a strikeout and groundout ended the threat and the game. Kapsner led the Saints at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run.

St. Peter (11-6, 7-1 RVL) travels to Waterville at 7:30 p.m. Friday for a non-league game and then has the rest of the holiday weekend off before returning to play Wednesday, July 5 at New Ulm.
