St. Peter town team drops a pair of Class B games to start season

Posted May 21, 2018

The St. Peter amateur baseball team started its season with a pair of one-run losses against Class B opponents. The Saints hosted Shakopee for their season opener on May 13 and lost 5-4, and then traveled to Chaska on Sunday, losing 2-1.

St. Peter, 4, Shakopee 5 | Box Score

A three-run homer in the first inning gave Shakopee a jolt to start the game, but the Saints battled and nearly completed a comeback victory in their first game since Sept. 2 at last year's state tournament.

Jesse Anderson, now in his 21st season with the team, started on the mound and gave up three runs in the opening frame, but followed with five scoreless innings. St. Peter answered in the bottom of the first with a run as Ty Kaus singled and later scored on a single by newcomer Austin Pinke, who formerly played for St. James.

The Saints made it a one-run game in the sixth as Jovan Rodriguez hit a leadoff double and scored two batters later on a groundout by CJ Siewert. The local nine then tied the game 3-3 in the eighth with nearly the exact same sequence – Rodriguez led off with a double and Siewert singled him home.

The Indians regained the lead in the ninth with a couple runs on as many hits off reliever Cullen Bruce. St. Peter was able to get a run back in the bottom half after Kaus singled and scored on a groundout by Pinke, but the tying run was stranded at third as a strikeout ended the game.

Anderson went six innings in his first start of the season, allowing three runs on five hits and one strikeout. Bruce suffered the loss in three innings of relief. He allowed two runs on two hits with a strikeout and a walk. Kaus (2-4, 2 R, BB) and Rodriguez (2-3, 2 R, 2 2B, 2 BB) led the team at the plate with a pair of hits and runs each.

St. Peter 1, Chaska 2 | Box Score

Facing another tough Class B opponent in the River Valley League, the Saints were unable to hold a 1-0 lead and eventually lost 2-1 on a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth.

St. Peter took its 1-0 advantage in the second as Billy Hanson walked and then scored on a throwing error. Jesse Anderson started on the mound for the second time in as many games, holding the Cubs scoreless until the fifth when they tied the score after a couple singles and a throwing error. The inning prior, Anderson worked out of a zero-out, bases-loaded jam.

The Chaska pitching was solid as the Saints only had five base runners, none reaching second base, in the final seven innings. Cullen Bruce came in relief for the second straight game and pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings, but in the ninth the Cubs singled, reached on an error, walked, and then hit the game-winning sac fly.

Jovan Rodriguez once again led the team at the plate, going 2-for-4. Anderson lasted six innings in another no-decision. He allowed one unearned run on six hits with six strikeouts. Bruce took the loss with one run allowed and one hit.

St. Peter plays its first RVL Class C opponent Friday at home against Jordan. First pitch at Veterans Field is set for 7:30 p.m.
