Giants complete Sunday sweep vs Kelowna

The South Fraser Giants kicked off their season with a doubleheader at Unwin Park versus the Kelowna Sun Devils.  The Giants were able to pull off both wins in the doubleheader. 

Game One: 

Marc Stocco (2019 Grad) got the start for the Giants.  His first inning of work was strong retiring the side in 11 pitches, recording a strikeout. 

The Giants hitters came ready to play recording 6 runs in the first inning.  Peccia (2019) & Baily (2019) both reached base on walks.  Sabourin (2019) singled to load the bases.  With 1 out, Gushel (2019) singled home Peccia & Baily to plate the Giants first two runs of the season.  Two batters later Wong (2019) got the Giants first home run of the year, with a 3 run shot to right field.  

Stocco had another 3 up, 3 down inning in the second.  Retiring the side in just 9 pitches.  

Top third with one out, Stocco gave up his first hit of the ballgame on a bunt single.  He came back strong striking out the next two hitters to end the inning.

Bottom of the third, Sabourin lead off the inning with a HBP.  With two outs in the inning, Kennedy (2021) scored Sabourin with a triple.  Wong continued his hot day at the plate scoring Kennedy with a single.  

Heading into the Fourth everything seemed to be going the Giants way up 8-0.  After retiring the first batter, Kelowna got a base runner on an error made by pitcher Marc Stocco.  Stocco then found himself with some command issues & walked a few Kelowna hitters.  Kelowna found their offence with 3 hits in the inning & scoring 5 runs.  

Top of the fifth saw Aiden Wood enter the game for the Giants out of the pen.  He recorded two strikeouts in the inning. 

Tanner Gushel lead off the bottom half of the 5th after reaching on an error.  Kennedy then hit his second RBI triple of the game.  Bradburn (2020) scored Kennedy with an RBI groundout.  After 5 innings, the Giants had a 10-5 lead.  

The Giants added an insurance run in the bottom of the 6th after an RBI double by Reilly Noble (2019). 

Kelowna would scored a unearned run in the 7th, but that was all.  The Giants took game one 11-6.

Game Two: 

Mason Kennedy (2021 Grad) got the start on the mound.  He got the first Kelowna hitter to fly out, but after 2 walks and an error the bases were loaded.  Kennedy got a ground ball up the middle & Giants shortstop Russell Wong (2019) completed the (6-3) double play.

The Giants offence gave Kennedy some early run support.  Jack Peccia (2019) lead off with a single.  He then proceeded to steal second & third.  He scored on an error made by the Kelowna catcher.  Wong would later score Gushel (2019) with an RBI single. 

Kennedy retired the side in the third with 2 strikeouts.  

The Giants had another strong offensive inning in the bottom of the second.  With 1 out, EH Clay Miller (2020) reached base on a walk & Stovern (2021) hit a line drive single up the middle.  Baily (2019) would score Miller with an RBI single. Stovern would score on a passed ball & Peccia scored on a bases loaded walk.  

Heading into the top of the 5th, Kennedy had a no hitter going until Kelowna lead off with a single.  Kelowna would score a run on an error made by 3B Logan Sabourin (2019). Kennedy exited the game allowing 0 earned runs through 5 innings. 

Top of the 6th saw Lucas Mendonca (2020) enter the game out of the pen for the Giants.  He got the first out of the inning, but a couple hits, walks, & an error allowed Kelowna to plate two runs in the inning. 

Bottom of the 6th saw Stovern (2021) lead off with a double.  He later scored on an error by the catcher, which gave the Giants a huge insurance run putting them up 6-3. 

Mendonca stayed in the game to try & get the save for the Giants.  He got the first out of the inning, but then walked the next two hitters.  Brennan Young (2020) entered the game to try and hold off Kelowna.  Kelowna would score a run on a past ball, but Young would get his only two hitters he faced to ground out. 

Giants win game two 6-4.
