Expos Offense Comes Alive on Final Day of 2016 RCBA Queen Victoria Invitational; Expos Place 5th After 9-0 Win Over Tri City in the

The Expos finally found their offense on the last day of the 2016 RCBA Queen Victoria Invitational. Vancouver Minor pounded out 35 hits in 2 games, defeating Burnaby in the "B" semifinal 14-4 in 5 innings then beating Tri City in the "B" final 9-0. The Expos place a respectable 5th of out 12 teams.

NOTE: Okotoks and Abbotsford lost in their semifinal matchups (against Delta and Richmond respectively) they placed 3rd/4th.

Burnaby 4 EXPOS 14 (5 innings)

The Expos were dropped to the "B" playoff pool after a disappointing 8-2 quarterfinal loss at the hands of the Richmond Chuckers. "B" playoff action got going on Monday with Burnaby taking on Vancouver Minor in one semifinal, and Tri City taking on Victoria Black in the other "B" semifinal. After only managing to score 3 runs in their last 2 games, the Expos were determined to get their bats going on the final day of the tournament. Vancouver put on a clinic in this contest as Burnaby pitching got knocked around for 14 runs on 21 hits in 5 innings. Domingo, Yamamoto, Suarez, Horino, Baybay and Howse all had 2 hit games. Betonio and Antiporda with a stellar 3 hit game. Hutchings with a quality start (4 innings, 2 hits, 1 run allowed, 1 walk and 6 strikeouts) and Ellis came in and locked it down despite a 2-out error.

MVP: #32 Nathaniel Antiporda

3/4 at the plate with a triple, 2 runs scored and a RBI

Tri City 0 EXPOS 9

The explosive offense that we saw from the Expos in the "B" Semifinal didn't let up in the "B" Final against a Tri City team that had to play right after an emotional extra-innings win over Victoria Black in the other "B" Semifinal. The bats picked up where it left off in the semis as Vancouver scored 9 runs on 14 hits; leadoff batter Domingo, cleanup hitter Hutchings and starting pitcher Horino all had 3 hit games and Antiporda had his second straight multi-hit game. Horino was excellent in the start throwing a complete game shutout (7 innings pitched, 5 hits, 0 walks, 0 runs and 5Ks), Horino was awarded MVP honours in the quarterfinal against Richmond so even though he was deserving of the trophy it was handed to Domingo. Domingo was arguably the MVP on the tournament for the Expos, due to injuries and absences he caught over 85% of the tournament innings and also had a very good tournament at the dish.

MVP: #15 Vicarte Domingo

3/4 at the plate, 2 runs scored, 2 RBIs, caught 7 innings and threw out a baserunner at 3rd

Overall, Vancouver Minor should be proud of what took place this tournament, they competed against some of the best teams in the league. The Expos took Abbotsford to the bottom of the 7th, held their ground for most of the game against a strong Richmond squad and finally found their offense and won the "B" final on the final day of the tournament finishing with a respectable 5th place out of 12 team tournament. Congrats to Cam Frick and his Delta Tigers for winning the championship game 3-0 over the hometown Richmond Chuckers, and a big thanks to all Richmond Bantam AAA parents and all Richmond City Baseball volunteers for hosting another world-class tournament, hope to be back next year. Onwards, the Expos will face Tri City again on Thursday at Bird Field 6:30pm.
