John Pierce: Director and Lead Coach, Head Coach 17 Blue- Coach Pierce has 30 years of coaching experience at the Division 1 level with over 350 career D1 wins. He coached at Virginia Tech for 17 years, having founded that program, Radford University for 5 years, where he was Big South Coach of the Year in 1998, and was most recently first assistant coach at Liberty University where he helped Liberty to 2 NCAA tournament berths against Florida and Southern Cal. He was Virginia Division 1 coach of the year in 1997 and Virginia State High school coach of the year in 1984. John also coached Radford High School to the state AA championship in 1984. He is "Impact Certified", founded the summer camp system "High Performance Volleyball Training" and has worked a large number of camps, including the National summer volleyball camp for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. John mentored under Dr. Taras Liskevych, former three time USA Olympic team coach and current head coach at Oregon State. John currently teaches elementary PE at Dalton Intermediate School in Radford, serves as a content writer for "prepvolleyball.com (the definitive website covering HS and club volleyball, and runs a woodworking business, Vision Woodworking.
Brian Smith: Assistant Lead Coach, Assistant Coach 17 Blue, Float coach and Assistant director- Coach Smith was the former head coach at Christiansburg High School, having retired from that position in the spring of 2011. He has also coached long term at Dayspring Christian Academy and has coached junior volleyball for many years along with running many camps. He is "Impact" certified. His Christiansburg HS team finished with the best record for the school is 23 years in the 2010 season. Brian worked at Virginia Tech as a microbiologist until his retirement in July of 2012, but is now a microbiologist once again with a new start-up company in Blacksburg.
Randy Marchany: Head Coach 16 Blue- Coach Marchany has served as assistant coach at Virginia Tech for 4 years and has coached with NRV juniors and Roanoke Juniors for 8 years. His 18/17 team finished 2nd in the region in 1998 and 3rd in 1999. He is an AVCA member and is "Impact Certified". Randy is one of the world’s leading experts on computer security and currently works at Virginia Tech as head of computer security and is a professional musician with the eclectic band "No Strings Attached".
Toni Wright: Assistant - Coach Wright served as head coach at Radford High School for 11 years and has also coached in Pulaski County. Toni is a physical education specialist at Belle Heth School in Radford and was named Three Rivers Volleyball coach of the Year in fall of 2010. Her teams at Radford took part in the state tournament 2 years in a row. She is "Impact Certified". She has coached with SWVJs for all of their seasons. She will coach either the 14 or 15-Blue team this season or either the 14s or 15s.
Ashton Moran: Head coach 14 or 15-Blue: Coach Moran played high school volleyball at Christiansburg HS and played 5 years for Coach Pierce's SWVJ teams. She was an outstanding setter for SWVJ and is the only player ever in the club to have her jersey number, #6, retired. Ashton will be a senior at Radford University in the fall of 2014. She has now coached with SWVJ for 3 seasons. She is an outstanding setter trainer.
Additional staff will include players from Virginia Tech and staff in Pulaski Co. Virginia.
