THE VERMILLION RED SOX

1930-1962

Amateur baseball has a long history in the State of South Dakota, which dates back to 1933 and the first South Dakota amateur baseball tournament. The Vermillion Red Sox amateur baseball team formed sometime in the 1930s-1940s. The Red Sox have always been based out of Vermillion, South Dakota, which is located in the Southwest corner of South Dakota and home to the University of South Dakota. Sometime in the 1940s-1950s, the Red Sox joined with the Vermillion Eagles and played semi-professional baseball through the State of South Dakota and the mid-west United States. In 1962, the Vermillion Red Sox reformed as an amateur baseball team and played throughout South Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska.

1962-1992

The Red Sox won their first recorded League Title in 1975, winning the South Central League. That same year, the Red Sox also qualified for their first trip to the South Dakota Amateur State Baseball Tournament. In 1976, the Red Sox repeated as South Central Champions, as well as District 6 Champions, but were defeated in the semi-finals of the South Dakota Amateur State Tournament. In approximately 1991, the South Dakota Amateur State Tournament was divided into 2 classes – Class A and Class B. A teams membership in a Class was based upon the population of its hosting city. The Red Sox became a member of Class B.

1992 to Present

Over the next 30 years, the Red Sox reached the Class B South Dakota Amateur State Tournament Championship game on 2 occasions. In 1992, the Red Sox were defeated by Madison 7-6, and in 1996, the Red Sox were defeated by Dell Rapids PBR 8-4. In 2003, the Red Sox finally won their first Class B State Championship, defeating Freeman 11-0 in Mitchell, South Dakota. In 2004, the Red Sox repeated as Class B State Champions, defeating Redfield 7-2 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In 2005, the Red Sox moved to Class A, which changed to a wooden bat league, and failed to qualify for the South Dakota State Tournament. In 2006, however, the Red Sox returned as Class A State Champions, defeating the Renner Monarchs 9-8 and becoming the first team to ever win the State Championship in both Class A and Class B.
