Boys athlete of the week

Name: Hunter Cervenka, senior, Baytown Sterling.

Notable: In a game against area No. 1 and state No. 2-ranked Atascocita, the Texas signee threw a three-hitter, allowing one run and striking out 18 batters. Cervenka also hit a solo home run in the 4-1 win, which gave the Rangers a tie for first in District 21-5A.

Quotable: "I got in a zone and they couldn't get me out of it. It felt amazing." - Hunter Cervenka

Other nominees:

Tyler Cooper, Santa Fe - The senior 1B was 4-for-6 at the plate with two home runs, seven RBIs and five runs to help the Indians to two wins last week.

Ross Hales, Barbers Hill - The senior pitcher went 3-for-3 with three home runs in a win over Smiley on Tuesday, and Friday gave up one run on three hits over seven innings in a 2-1 win over Huffman to clinch the District 21-4A title.

Isaiah Sweeney, Hightower - The senior picked up four gold medals at the District 23-5A track meet. Sweeney won the long jump (23-11), the 100-meter dash (10.54 seconds), and was on the winning 400-meter (41.15) and 800-meter relay (1:25.82) teams.

Taylor Terrasas, Santa Fe - The junior SS was 7-for-9 at the plate with a home run, a double, six RBIs and six runs scored.

DeAndre Thompson, Alief Taylor - The senior won four medals at the District 18-5A track meet Tuesday, including two golds. Thompson won the triple jump (46-11) and the 400-meter dash (48.93 seconds) and was on the second-place 800-meter relay team (1:29.06) and third-place 1,600-relay team (3:21.68).

Girls athlete of the week

Name: Meghan Brown, senior, Cinco Ranch.

Notable: The Cinco Ranch catcher had a memorable Friday night as she hit three home runs, leading the Cougars to a 5-4 win over Katy.

Quotable: "If you give Meghan a good pitch, she is going to get a good look on it and get a big hit. She has been really seeing the ball well this season."

Other nominees:

Amber Evans, Elsik - The senior won three gold medals at the District 18-5A meet Tuesday. Evans won the 200-meter dash (25.48 seconds) and ran on the winning 400-meter (46.78) and 800-meter (1:39.18) relay teams.

Alyssa Garcia, MacArthur - The infielder made several key defensive plays and had a triple and two RBIs in the Generals' 8-5 win over Nimitz on Friday night.

Nicole Gremillion, Elkins - The sophomore pitcher led the Knights to a 4-2 win over Clements in a game for the lead in 23-5A.

Franchelle Hill, Hightower - The sophomore won two gold medals at the District 23-5A meet Monday. Hill won the 100-meter dash (11.94 seconds) and ran on the winning 400-meter relay team (47.69).

Morgan Pressley, Alief Taylor - The junior picked up five medals at the District 18-5A meet Tuesday, including three golds. Pressley won the 400-meter dash (57.58 seconds), the long jump (18-1.5) and the triple jump (38-10).
