Great defensive game against FSU today..
In the top of the first, we held FSU scoreless on some good defense by Dawson, David, and Branan! The leadoff hitter hit a high pop that Dawson got under for out #1. The next batter grounded to David at pitcher. He gobbled the ball up and threw a strike to Dawson for an easy out. FSU loaded the bases on 3 infield hits, one of them hitting the machine that would have been an easy out. They grounded the ball to Branan who fielded and threw to Dawson for out #3. In the bottom half, Branan led off with a hit down the 3rd base line. Dawson had a hit, but we struck out 3 times to go scoreless also.
In the top of the 2nd, the lead off hitter hit a weak grounder to first that Branan fielded and stepped on the bag for out #1. After a strikeout, FSU had a nice hit down the left field line, but Calvin got the ball back in quickly to hold them to a single. The 3rd out of the inning was a strikeout. In the bottom half, we did our damage with the bottom of the order. Griffin led off and barely got thrown out at first, but he was hustling down the line. David had a hard hit to get the rally started. Brandon had a basehit to put runners on 1st and 2nd with one out. In stepped Calvin who hit a ball down the right field line to score both runners! Great job Calvin. After a strikeout, Will had his best hit of the year with a hard knock to right that drove Calvin in for a big 3rd run! We ended the inning striking out.
In the top of the 3rd, FSU led off with a strikeout. A nice hit to left field had FSU's hope running wild, but 2 straight balls were hit to Jonah who stepped on the bag at second twice to end the threat! In the bottom half, Branan led off with another hit! After a strikeout, Dawson and Jonah followed with hits to drive Branan in from second. We left 2 runners on with 2 consecutive strikeouts. After 3 BAMA 4, FSU 0
In the top of the 4th, our defense did their job again! After a leadoff single, a FSU batter struckout. Then a grounder was hit to Jonah who flipped to Branan who fired to first...not quite in time for the double play, but it was nicely turned! Good job guys. 2 out! The last batter struckout to end the inning. In the bottom half, David and Brandon had hits to get into scoring position, but we had 3 consecutive strikeouts to let FSU off the hook!
On to the top of the 5th. The leadoff hitter hit one to David at pitcher who gobbled it up quickly and fired to Dawson for a big first out! The next batter hit a hard hit ball up the middle that Jonah snared and fired to first for a HUGE 2nd out. The last batter stuckout to keep the shutout in tact and preserve the Tide win! Final score Bama 4, FSU 0.
This was a great game defensively. We threw a batter out from every infield position except 3rd and it was a bang bang play that the runner beat out! David, Branan, Jonah, and Dawson did a great job getting big outs today. Calvin and Brandon did a great job getting the ball back into the infield. I think they only had 2 balls all game hit into the outfield! Alex did a great job backing up first base from right field on one over throw! Great hustle Alex!
We had a tough time hitting today. We struck out a team high 11 times...that is giving the other team almost 4 innings of outs! They threw us out on the base path 1 time. We just need to put the ball in play! Make the other team make plays! We will work on hitting at practice again this week.
The following players were perfect at the plate: Branan, Dawson, David, and Brandon! Great job guys. Jonah, Calvin, and Will were 1 for 2. Calvin had 2 huge RBI's and Will had 1. Dawson had the 4th RBI of the day! Great job guys! Get ready for next weekend with Maryland.
