The Nickel Longview Babe Ruth team won its first game of the season by defeating Athletes Corner 6-1. Athletes pitchers Sean Atkins and Austin Wagdahl allowed only 4 hits, 2 walks and a hit batter, and struck out 5 Nickels, but the red-clad opponents plated 6 runs out of this meager production, thanks to 6 errors in the field, and 2 close calls at home plate. Drew Zandi, Tyler VonDracek and Michael Puvogel each had singles and Tyler Silk whalloped a double over center fielder Michael Bartel's head just after Athletes coaches had moved him in 5 steps. On the other side of the ledger, thet Athletes could only muster 1 run from their 5 hits and 2 walks. Two runners were thrown out on close plays, and the Nickel played near flawless defense, with only 1 error. AC stranded 7 runners, all in scoring position. Branick Herold had 3 singles, and Lars Ertolacci and Nam Le also hit safely. Nickel hurlers Devin Richards, Austin Bragg, and Michael Puvogel struck out 7. Athletes played without power hitting Alex Lovingfoss, who is out with a quadraceps injury, and leadoff hitter Scotty Kirkpatrick, who was playing in a MM basketball game. The second game of the 2-game series was postponed due to school football practice and basketball games and will be played next week at a time/place to be announced. |
