Game Notes: Tough game today. I overheard one of our players say (when we were down 2-0), that we shouldn't know what place our opponents are in, we can't seem to play well when we know. Knowing isn't the problem, its what we do with that knowledge that is. Today we did not elevate our game as a team.

First Half:

The game started with both teams feeling each others strengths and weaknesses. It became apparent very quickly that the Burnaby team engaged a kick and run style, and really had only one strong player (#14 - more on him later). The first 6 minutes went by fair evenly. Neither team testing the net, and we were moving the ball quite well. The first foul came at 7 minutes from Markus, a weak call, which would seems to have set the tone for more calls to come. A minutes later, Burnaby #14 would run through half our team and get the first goal at 8 minutes. Disappointing, but there was still lots of game ahead. Jordan would get our first shot on net at the 11 minute mark, but it was the Burnaby team who got the next goal at 15 minutes. After a scramble in front, and a directed handball in our 18, they would make the score 2-0 (The ref missed the Burnaby handball). During the next 22 minutes we would go offside 5 times! We also recorded 8 shots on goal, to Burnaby's 0. Despite this push, the half ended with us down by 2.

Second Half:

The second half, Burnaby came out strong, getting the first shot at 48 minutes. But they would foul Jack in the Box, getting us a Penalty Shot, which Ben put away at the 50 minute mark. This gave us some life and over the next 24 minutes, we would get four more chances to score. We went to a 3 man defensive line early, electing to push up more forwards at the 60 minute mark. This seemed to work, as Jack got us to within 1 goal at the 72 minute after he finished with a great run and shot. Unfortunately, the Burnaby team would take the ensuing kickoff and (#14) would run past our forwards, midfields and defenders and give Burnaby a 2 goal cushion again. This was the most frustrating time of the game for coaches, players and probably parents as well. Although there was time left, we had lost our heart for the game and couldn't mount a comeback.

POG: The player of the game was given to Mitchell, who was in beast mode most of the game. He made several strong tackles, decisive runs and clearings. Despite being exhausted late in the game, he stuck it out and worked as hard as he could to stop Burnaby's attack. He showed true leadership after the game as well as I saw him encouraging several players who were disappointed with their play. Well done Mitchell.
