Game Notes: *On Saturday, Toronto FC was very excited to face the only other undefeated team in the league. As the start of the game approached, the coaches gave a quick speech to the kids that no matter what happens in the game, the point of playing was to have fun and that we viewed the boys as champions already.

The first half was scoreless. The team was missing Matthew M. but nonetheless, the team was able to keep the LA Galaxy’s top scorers off the board due to the incredible defense of Matthew L., Richi, Evan, Dan, Jacob Gannon, Drew and Josh. In goal in the 1st half, Dan once again played spectacularly as he did not give up any goals. In fact, I do not believe Dan gave up any goals in the entire season and he played goalie in each game. Richi also played well in goal along with Ethan. The entire game was quite physical and Jacob Gannon took the brunt of these hits but he continued to play through pain. On offense, Jacob, Ethan, Josh, Jake, Matt L., Alec, Evan and Dan had several opportunities to score but were also turned back by some outstanding defense by the LA Galaxy.

In the 4th period, things got a little strange. The referee made a call against our team providing the LA Galaxy an opportunity to kick the ball in the goal. Some of you may remember when a similar call was made against an opposing team and I had advised the referee that its an indirect kick so that we should not be entitled to a free kick even through my son, Jake was about to score. The coaches on our team do not wish to take advantage of another team and we were able to convince the referee to change the call which ended up as a mere kick into several players. However, on Saturday, the referee did not advise our players to set up a proper wall and the ball sailed into the net. None of the coaches including LA Galaxy saw the ball hit anyone. Under the rules of a indirect kick, a goal cannot be scored unless it touches a player. The team was upset but given the fact that these referees are only 11 year old and are doing it for the first time, we accepted the call.

In the 5th period, LA Galaxy scored the 2nd goal and last goal against Toronto FC. Throughout the 2nd half, Toronto FC on offense, led by Josh, Matt L., Ethan, Dan, Drew, Jacob and Richi tried very hard to score but were turned away by the LA Galaxy’s top 2 players. On defense, Jake, Alec, Josh, Dan, Richi, Matt L. and Ethan prevented several scoring opportunities against the team. In goal, Evan stopped several shots on goal. Josh came in on short notice and also played well in goal and Jake ended the game in goal with several saves and his first punt which surprised all the players and spectators as the ball sailed almost to the midfield line.

At the end of the game, the team was upset but the coaches told them they played their hearts out and should be proud of themselves. The coaches told the kids that the team would bounce back on Sunday and to forget about the loss.
