Game Notes: The boys really came to play on Saturday as Hurricane Hanna kept quiet on opening day. The team opened the scoring as Matt McLaughlin took a nice pass from Jacob Gannon in the opening minutes of the 1st period. It happened so fast that the coaches on the sideline did not know what even happened. Thanks to Coach Jeff for providing the details of the goal. Throughout the 1st period, the team really dominated as the defensive pressure of Alec, Josh and Evan kept the ball for almost the entire period on the other team’s field. Ethan and Jake had several breakaways but were turned away by a very strong Fire Defense. Dan in goal was not to busy during the 1st period which is the team’s “goal”.

During the 2nd and 3rd periods, Matt Leviss, Drew and Richi came off the bench and showed tremendous skills as they played both on the offensive and defensive sides of the field. Richi and Matthew McLauglin kept the shutout as they played very well in goal. Josh and Alec and Evan moved from defense to offense late in the 1st half and continued to pressure the Fire Defense.

At the half, the game was Toronto FC 1 Fire 0.

In the 2nd half, Evan was placed in goal and once again the defense of Jake, Alec and Josh kept the ball away from the goalie. Richi showed his speed on the field as he chased down several long passes. Ethan then scored the team’s 2nd goal by virtue of Matthew M.’s nice assist. Ethan then went down with an injury and was replaced by Dan who played very well in Ethan’s absence.

The start of the 5th period, resulted in the Fire’s sole goal being scored after almost an amazing save by Jacob in goal. In the 6th period, the heat and humidity took a toll on the team; however, the defense of Jacob Gannon, Ethan and Matt M. kept the score at 2-1 as Jake in goal had to make a limited number of saves. Matthew L. and Drew did make some very nice moves down the field on offense and with the speed of Richi the team almost scored another goal.

All in all, the coaches were very impressed with how well the boys played as a team against a very good Fire team. The defenders listened to the coach by not playing on the offensive side, and the throw-ins were all good.

MVP’s of the game:

Offense: Dan Minion: Dan had an outstanding offensive game as he chased down several balls and was able to pass them to his teammates. He also exhibited great soccer smarts as he anticipated where the other team was going to pass the ball and stole several passes during the game.

Defense: Evan Goldenstein: Evan played a great defensive game under relentless pressure from the Fire’s 2 best players. He was one of the key players who kept the ball away from our goalie during several periods of the game.

Congrats to both Dan and Evan!
