Pecatonica got off to an early lead, which the Vikings never relinquished in the first "away" game of the season. The first score of the game came when, with bases loaded, N. Loyd earned a base on balls. Two more walked batters would bring in runs to end the top of the 1st inning. The first batter for Mt Horeb (Team #2) would also cross home plate as a result of walks, but that would be the only run scored for the home team. In the 2nd, N. Spink started the Vikings off strong with a double to left field. Pecatonica extended the lead by 8 more runs, with the highlight being a triple hit by S. McVay while bases were loaded. Both teams failed to score in the 3rd inning playing mirror-image 1-2-3 out combinations of: strikeout, ground out at first base, and strikeout. For Pecatonica, N. Loyd fielded the unassisted out at first base. In the 4th, J. Scoville would earn an RBI on a single (hit as an in-field grounder to the pitcher) by beating the throw to first. When that throw went wide, Scoville advanced two bases, beating another wild throw to third. As a result of that error, he completed his trek around the diamond for the only run of the 4th inning. In the 5th, Pecatonica capitalized on numerous walks and singles to score eight more runs. The game was called when Mt. Horeb failed to make up the 19-run deficit in the bottom of the 5th. |
