Posted May 17/12 - Douglas Secures 1st Ever Regional Birth |
It was a great day for the Douglas College baseball team as they captured their first ever Regional birth on home soil this afternoon. It certainly wasn't easy as Douglas lost two close ball games at Olympic College on Sunday while Skagit swept Shoreline to force the one game playoff today at Whalley Stadium, Monday at 2:00pm.
Over the weekend, The Royals held the OC Rangers to only 3 earned run over 22 innings of baseball on Sunday and DC could not get the big hit when they needed it. Olympic College, who was already eliminated from the postseason, played the spoiler role well by playing near perfect baseball and managed to beat Douglas 2-1 (in 12 innings) in game one and 3-1 in game two down in Bremerton, WA. The Rangers made numerous big plays and limited Douglas to only two runs despite the Royals 16 hits over the double header.
Today at Whalley, the Royals had a nightmare start as starter Dylan Remenyk gave up a grand slam with no one out in the first inning. Douglas pecked away at the lead but couldn't stop the Skagit offense as Remenyk was chased in the 3rd after giving up six runs on six hits. Clayton Franco came in on one day rest (103 pitch win Saturday) to limit the damage and held the Cardinals to one run over 3 innings of work.
Down 7-5 in the 7th, the Royals put together a rally that will go down in program lore. DC sent 15 hitters to the plate and managed to score 10 runs on 9 hits. Dan Altoe then came in (also on 1 day rest) and pitched 3 scoreless innings to secure the 15-7 victory. Shayne Kelly was 5 for 6 (with 5 RBI's) and Bryan Arthur, Jeremy Kral, Sheldon Sinnott, James Zamko, and Matt Ney also added 2+ hits each.
It was a proud day at the field and the win was well deserved for the boys after years of hard work. DC will now travel to Bellevue College this weekend to face the host team in a four team double knockout tournament with Bellevue, Edmonds and Everett CC. Two teams (one being Bellevue) will emerge from the tournament and represent the North at the NWAACC championships on May 24th-28th at Lower Columbia College. Read More...
