Posted Jul 9/21 - Central Substate Playoffs Set to Begin July 12

The BOLD Mudhens have earned a #1 seed in the upcoming 2021 D2 Senior Legion playoffs with a 5-1 league record.  That seeding will give the Mudhens the chance to play at least the first two rounds of tournament action at Lions Memorial Park in Bird Island.  The other teams competing in the double elimination tournament for the South Pod of the Central Substate will be #2 seed Sacred Heart-MACCRAY (4-2), #3 seed Redwood Falls (2-4), and #4 seed Hector-Fairfax (1-5).  First round games will be Monday, July 12 in Bird Island and Sacred Heart.  The second round will take place Thursday, July 15 at the home of the higher seeds and will wrap up with an elimination game Friday and championship Saturday.  The pod winner then advances to the substate final four tournament the following week with a chance to advance to the D2 Senior Legion State Tournament to be played in Sacred Heart July 30 through August 1st.

The Mudhens are the defending Central Substate champions.  There were no legion playoffs in  2020. BOLD was crowned the substate champions the last time Minnesota sponsored legion playoffs in 2019 when they defeated Atwater in the pod championship and then had to go to a third and decisive game to defeat Paynesville and Albany in best of 3 matchups.

The first tournament for the Mudhens, which was to be played in Marshall and Milroy June18-20, ran into some complications due to the strength of the field of teams entered.  Albany, Willmar, and the home town Marshall team all won their way to the state high school league tourney.  We will still compete in the event although the schedule will be altered greatly.  Beginning at 11:00am on Saturday, BOLD will take on Luverne in back to back games in Milroy.  There will be no Sunday games for the tournament.

Posted Jul 17/20 - Mudhens On A Winning Streak

After dropping their first three games of the season, all by close scores, the BOLD Mudhens have rattled off five straight victories. In doing so, the team has scored 8.4 runs per game over the winning streak compared to just 2 per game in the previous three games.  The team batting average increased from .103 after the three losses to a more respectable .261 after the latest game versus Hector.  Defensive errors have been costly though.  After 8 games the Mudhens have given up 28 runs, but only 10 of those have been earned.  That calculates out to a miniscule 1.19 ERA which, if maintained, would shatter the team record of 1.78 set in 2019.

Check the schedule tab on the left side of this page.  There are currently 5 games remaining on our 2020 schedule - Redwood Falls, New London-Spicer, Tritown-Atwater, Marshall, and Montevideo.  But more games are hopefully going to be added so keep up to date on the schedule.

Posted Apr 26/20 - 2020 Legion Season Still a Possibility

The MN State Legion Baseball Board had a virtual meeting Saturday, April 9th to discuss the possibilities of a 2020 season ever becoming a reality.  The Board is taking a cautious but hopeful stand for now.  As I'm sure you know the state high school league has cancelled all spring sports.  Our hearts are hurting right now for you players who are most affected by this decision.  As for Legion ball however, everything is still on hold until May 9th, which is when the our State Legion Baseball Board is scheduled to meet again.  Until then, no official legion practices, games, etc. can happen until at least that day.  By May 9th presumably there will be new guidance from the health authorities through our government leaders that will give our direction.  Our goal is to have a 2020 season - whatever that looks like.  Of course, we all realize that the decision is not entirely in our control.  I trust the Board to make the best decision based on facts and current conditions of the virus.  I hope you trust them too.

In the meantime, I encourage all of you to continue to do the work needed to be ready whenever the opportunity to practice and play presents itself.

Posted Aug 22/19 - Off Season Notes For BOLD Legion Baseball

Now that the 2019 legion baseball season is completed, it's time to reflect on what transpired during an eventful season and look ahead to a promising 2020 season.  We must first of all say thank you to a great group of players who will now move on from BOLD baseball.  We wish the best of luck to Jack Peppel (continuing baseball career at MN Crookston), James Woelfel(Bethel), Luke Ryan(UMD), John Burman, and Hayden Tersteeg.  Kyle Kostorhyz(Ridgewater) and Cade Morse are two other seniors who are eligible to return to the Mudhens in 2020 if they choose.

The rosters for the Mudhens in 2020, and also for the junior legion Blue Angels, will look quite different next season.  While the Mudhens cast off a lot of talented players, they will add a number of players from a large group of new BOLD High School juniors.  In all, nine sophomores, several of whom were on the Mudhens roster in 2019 will be relied upon to play major roles in 2020.  Add them to a senior class that includes the top two pitchers from 2019, and it is quickly apparent that big things can be expected from the Mudhens in 2020.

The Mudhens gain is the Blue Angels loss.  Those nine sophomores, who will be juniors for 2020, will not be eligible for junior legion again.  That means that a number of younger players will be called upon to fill several spots on the junior roster.  We didn't have a lot of 8th and 9th graders participating in 2019.  Hopefully, we can attract more players from those classes in 2020.  But expect that there will be opportunities for some players younger than that to move up and play big roles in 2020.

The 2020 state tournaments are set for Sacred Heart (Senior Division 2) and Montevideo (Junior Division 2).  Each is right our back yard.  Wouldn't it be great to be able to send both teams to state in 2020?

Posted Aug 5/19 - Mudhens Bring Home Hardware From State Tournament

The BOLD Mudhens hoped to improve on their previous four Division 2 State tourney appearances as they traveled to Ely for the August 1-4 event. The results, while not exactly what we had in mind, were positive nonetheless. Due to scheduling coincidences, the Mudhens managed to play in the first game of each of the three days. Morning games can be problematic since they tend to knock players and coaches out of their normal game prep routines. But the guys responded well, especially after being no-hit 2-0 in the tournaments opening game. Justin Dykhoff threw the no-no and BOLD surrendered one unearned run. Luke Ryan just missed a home run when a high fly ball sailed over the fence but just foul. That and a diving catch by the Wadena shortstop off a blooper hit by John Burman were as close as BOLD came to recording a hit. Jordan Sagedahl took a tough loss on the mound surrendering just four hits in six innings of work.

Game two saturday morning pitted BOLD against Breckenridge. The game remained scoreless until the top of the 5th inning when BOLD finally reached the scoreboard with three runs. Two more were added in the 6th inning and the final score was 5-1. Matt Moorse picked up the win while Jack Peppel pitched a 1-2-3 7th.

The consolation final matched BOLD against Luverne. It proved to be a battle to see which team had the most pitching left. Both starters struggled but BOLD battled their way to a 5-4 lead after just two innings of play. Ryan led off the bottom of the 1st with a home run and Sagedahl had two RBI's in the second inning. Peppel started on the mound and went three innings and left with the 5-4 lead intact.  James Woelfel was solid in relief and threw the final four innings for the win.

This was the 5th trip to state for the Mudhens. Previously they appeared in 2010 in Dilworth (0-2), 2013 in Bird Island (1-2), 2015 in Morris (1-1 eliminated on run differential), and 2017 in Spicer (1-1 eliminated on run differential). So this is the first time the team has brought home hardware. Congratulations to the players and a big thanks to our parents and sponsors - Olivia Legion Post 186, Bird Island Post 430, Olivia Sons of Legion Post 186. We also received financial support from the Olivia Legion Auxillary and the Olivia Kiwanis Club.

Posted Jul 26/19 - Mudhens Battle Their Way to Sub-State Finals

The Mudhens had to scratch and claw their way past the Paynesville Plums in the south half finals in three games to reach the Central Sub-state finals.  There whey will face Albany who defeated Annandale 2 games to none in the north finals.  The first two games of that best of three series will take place in St. Martin beginning at 6:00pm Saturday, July 27th.  If a third game is needed, it will be played Sunday evening in Avon.

Matt Moorse picked up the win by a 5-1 score with a complete game effort against Paynesville in game one of the series in Bird Island on Tuesday.  The scene shifted to Paynesville for game two Thursday night and the Plums came from behind twice pull out a 5-4 victory forcing the decisive game three that night.  In the second game the Plums rallied again, this time trailing BOLD 3-0 and 5-1.  They scored 4 times in the bottom of the 7th to force extra innings.  Luke Ryan's right arms prevented a BOLD loss in that inning as he threw out a runner at home plate from the right center field fence.  In the top of the eighth, BOLD loaded the bases with one out and Jordan Sagedahl belted a three run triple to right center and he then scored as Jack Peppel followed that with an RBI single.

This past weekend the BOLD Mudhens confidently defended their home turf by sweeping three straight games at Lions Memorial Park to earn the right to move on to the Central Sub-State Final Four.  The Pod4 championship marked the 8th straight year that the Mudhens have advanced to either the District 7, or for the past two seasons, the Central Sub-State Final Four.

The four team Pod4 double elimination tournament began for the Warriors on Wednesday, July 17th with a 5-0 victory over Redwood Falls. Posted Jun 19/17 - Hutchinson Rolls Through 2017 Mudhen Invitational

The 2017 edition of the BOLD Mudhen Invitational Tournament turned out to be the personal playground for the Hutchinson team.  Their three wins were all ended early due the 10-run rule being enforced.  Only Annandale, in pool play, was able to score against them as the pitching staff was dominant.  Couple that with an offense the produced 38 runs in three games and you have a classic formula for championships.

In pool play Hutchinson downed Granite Fall 10-0 and Annandale/Clear Lake 12-2.  That set up a championship matchup against West St Paul who defeated Cottonwood 10-0 and BOLD 8-3 in pool play.  Hutchinson proved to have the deeper pitching staff for the weekend and blew away West St Paul Challenger 16-0 in the final game of the tournament.

Congratulations to Hutchinson, who also claimed championships in 2015 and 2013 at the Mudhen Invitational.

BOLD finished 2-1 in the tournament after winning the 3rd place game 8-5 over Granite Falls.

Posted Jul 18/15 - BOLD Repeats As Division Champion

For the fourth season in a row, and fifth time in the past six years, the Mudhens will head into the District 7 legion Final Four in Montevideo.  And they do so riding a seven game winning streak which culminated with three agme sweep in the Southern Division playoffs.  The 5-4 victory in the division final over Madison marked the fifth straight game in which BOLD trailed but came back to win.  The win over Madison came in dramatic fashion where a two run deficit entering the seventh inning was erased when Austin Weis doubled home Ben Steffel (walk) and Lane Stadther (single) to tie the score.  Weis eventually scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Max Buchtel for what proved to be the winning run.  Stadther (3-1) picked up the win pitching the first six innings.  Steffel picked up his second save pitching a scoreless seventh.

The division title sends BOLD to the Final Four as a number one seed.  They will take on the nuimber two seed from the North Division (NLS, Glenwood, or Wheaton) in a 5:15 game back at Montevideo.  BOLD would need at least three wins to earn a trip to the State Division II tournament in Morris.

Posted Jul 12/15 - Mudhens End Regular Season On High Note

The BOLD Mudhens swept Hutchinson to end the 2015 regular season in an exciting manner in Bird Island last Saturday. The two teams battled back and forth with lead changes taking place in both games.  In game one Hutchinson lead 4-0 after four and half innings only to see the BOLD offense come to life in the bottom of the 5th and 6th innings, scoring six times to win 6-4.  In game two, with BOLD as the visitor on the scoreboard, the Mudhens scored five tmes only to see Hutchinson come right back with four runs of their own in the bottom of the first.  Hutchinson took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the 2nd but BOLD tied the score in the top of the 3rd at 6-6. Hutchinson took a one run lead back in the bottom of the 4th.  But BOLD was able to push across three runs in their half of the 6th and then held on as center fielder Lane Stadther made a fine running catch in deep center field for the final out of the game with the tying and potential winning runs on base.  Ben Steffel picked up the win in game one and earned a save in game two.

Morris struck first with an unearned run in the top of the second inning on a play which ended with two outs being recorded.  The second out of the inning came on a force out at second base in a bases loaded situation.  But when the relay throw to first got away, the third out of the inning came on a perfect throw to the plate gunning down what would have been the second run of the inning.  BOLD struck back with three runs in the fourth inning, two of which scored on an errant throw to third base after a sacrifice bunt attempt by Joel Erickson.  Logan Sandgren won his second game of the tournament as he went the distance giving up five hits and four walks.

BOLD will next play at 7:00 pm in the state tournament on their home field Friday night.  They will take on the winner of District 6 in the last of four first round games that day.

Posted Jul 21/13 - BOLD Comes Back to Win Region Title

The BOLD Mudhens took a detour on their way to the Region 3 championship on Sunday in Fairfax.  Logan Sandgren's no-hitter against Hector in the first round of the tournament on Thursday set up a match up of the two top seeds in the tournament to see who would be the lone remaining undefeated team in the tourney field.  In the Saturday game, Sacred Heart-MACCRAY was able to get their "small ball" game in high gear and outlasted BOLD 7-6 in a game that ended with the tying and winning runs on base for BOLD.

The Mudhens then took out their frustrations on Hector for the second time in three days winning 14-4 and earning a rematch with the Scarlets of SH-MACCRAY on Sunday.  BOLD would have to win twice in order to advance to the District 7 Final Four.  That's just what they did getting a complete game 9-1 victory from Riley Kramer in the first game.  Then BOLD got a gutsy four inning starting performance by Sawyer Tersteeg, who hadn't been expected to play at all, in a 9-2 victory.

BOLD plays next in Montevideo in the District 7 Final Four at 7:45 Tuesday night against Osakis.

Posted Jul 10/13 - Mudhens Complete Undefeated League Schedule

A 10-0 win over Eden Valley-Watkins on July 10th in Bird Island put a exclamation point on an undefeated 2013 league schedule for the BOLD Mudhens.  The Mudhens went 8-0 in league play with victories over Kerkhoven, Litchfield, Willmar, Tritown, NLS, Hector, and GFW prior to the win over EVW.

Posted Jun 20/13 - Hutchinson Takes 2013 Mudhen Tournament Title

The Hutchinson Legion team has participated in the Mudhen Invitational Tournament ten of its 11 year existence.  Only in 2006 were they unable to attend.  Some of those teams were very competitive and others struggled just to field a full squad.  In 2013 though, the Tigers came to Bird Island ready to compete with the best the tournament had to offer.  After defeating New London-Spicer 5-0 on Friday and Ham Lake 6-1 on Saturday, they were pitted against West St. Paul in the championship game Sunday afternoon.  In a well played game on both sides, they prevailed 7-4 to win the title.

This years tournament featured what would be considered the most balanced field in recent memory.  Other than NLS's 11-3 victory over Litchfield in the 3rd place game, no game was decided by more than 5 runs.  The 2013 tournament also featured the smallest field in several years with only six teams.  BOLD (A champion) and Watertown (AA 4th place) each dropped out after qualifying for the State High School tournament.  Attempts to replace the two teams were unsuccessful.

Posted Jun 10/13 - 2013 Early Season Games Moved

All Mudhen games scheduled for the week of June 10-16 have been rescheduled due to the BOLD Warriors participation in the State High School Class A Tournament.

Monday's Eden Valley-Watkins game in Bird Island is now set for Wednesday, July 10th at 7:00pm in Bird Island.

Thursday's game at Spicer will now be played on Monday July 8th at 8:00pm in Spicer.  The Hector game, originally slated for that night has been moved back one day to Tuesday, the 9th of July, and will still be played at Lions Memorial Park.  The later start in Spicer on Monday is because we will actually be the 2nd game that night for NLS after they play their regularly scheduled game against Kerkhoven.

Our 11th Annual Mudhen Invitational Tournament will still go on starting June 14th, and continuing through Sunday the 16th.  If we are not able to replace our team, the tourney will simply drop to seven teams.  We will still need plenty of parent and player help to run this event, which is our largest team fundraiser for the year.

Next Monday's game against Kerkhoven has not yet been rescheduled.  It will go on as scheduled unless the Warriors are playing that day in the state championship game.

With both of these rescheduled games being moved into the same week in July, we have dropped the non-league game against Montevideo that was scheduled for Thursday that week.  Attempts are being made to reschedule this game as well but the openings in the schedule are limited and this will take a lower priority than league games.

Posted Jun 7/13 - 2013 Mudhen Schedule Will Be Delayed - YES!!!

Congratulations to the BOLD Warriors on winning their second consecutive Section 2A Championship!  They will begin play at the state tournament on Thursday June 13th.  The time and opponent will be determined after all section playoffs are completed.

Of course, this will require the Mudhens braintrust to scramble to reschedule some of the early games in their 2013 season.  Watch this web site for updates of game dates.

For the second straight year, the Mudhens will not be participating in their own invitational tournament June 14-16.  The tournament will go on as it did in 2012 and a replacement team is currently being sought to get the tourney field back up to eight teams.  this is our largest fundraiser for the team, so players and parents are reminded that, within reason, they are still asked to help out with the operation of the tournament.  Contact Kim Erickson to sign up for time slots for concessions or gate.

Posted May 6/13 - 2013 Schedule Announced

This summer's Mudhen schedule will present a variety of opponents in terms of the sizes of the base schools and also opponents that will provide the 2013 team with some beneficial challenges.  We have traditionally attempted to schedule quality opponents as much as possible with the idea that if you want to be the best, you've got to beat the best.

New to our Mudhens tournament in June will be Ham Lake who will replace Chaska from last years tourney field which gives us four Division 1 teams (Litchfield, Hutchinson, and West St Paul) in the eight team field.

Our league schedule includes the same eight opponents as last year with Division 1 Litchfield and Willmar and also teh defending District 7, D2 champion Eden Valley-Watkins.

Non league games include some top quality opponents in the Luverne/Pipestone tournament (we are the defending champs there) the last weekend of June.  Entered in that tournament are 2012 state tournament entrants Luverne and Sacred Heart as well as several teams from North and South Dakota and Nebraska.  Regional Champion, Wahpeton is scheduled to be there.  Just before that tournament, on June 27th State tournament runner-up Ely will make a return trip to Bird Island while on their annual trip south to the southern part of the state.

Also new to our schedule this year will be the Litchfield tournament in July the weekend before playoffs begin.  BOLD may end up being the only D2 team entered as all other teams entered so far are D1 teams.  They include (as of now) Litchfield, Cold Spring, Waconia for starters.

Follow schedule updates and results here on the Mudhen's website.

Posted Jul 27/12 - Mudhens Bow Out Of District 7 Play

The BOLD Mudhens were eliminated from District 7 play by Eden Valley-Watkins in a wild game that ended with the winning run stranded at 1st base in the bottom of the 7th inning. EV-W outhit BOLD 14-12 and outcored them 13-11. Four unearned runes in the top if the 1st inning proved costly for the Mudhens as they never fully recovered.  They trailed by as many as six runs twice at 8-2 and 13-7, and by as little as one run at 8-7.

BOLD finished the 2012 season at 17-8 setting team records in wins, hits(216) and ERA(2.60).

Posted Jul 22/12 - Congratulations! Mudhens are Region 3 Champs

The BOLD Mudhens won the Region 3 title with a couple of nail biter one run victories over GFW. On Saturday, GFW opened a seven run lead in the top of the second inning only to see BOLD pick away at the lead and finally rally for three runs in the bottom of the 7th.  That pushed BOLD into Sunday as the last remaining undefeated team in the double elimination tournament.  Later on Saturday, GFW then nearly blew another 7 run lead against Tritown but hung on by an 8-6 score to earn the right to challenge the Mudhens in the finals on Sunday.  In the championship game, after GFW had grabbed a 3-2 lead in the top of the 6th BOLD came right back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning for the 4-3 win and the Region title.

BOLD now advances to the District 7 Final Four and will face Morris Tuesday evening in Montevideo at 5:15. Montevideo is also in the Final Four and the 4th team is not known yet.
