Congratulations to the ballclub and community for another successful year.  Although the on-the-field results, weren't necessarily what we wanted, the improvements made to the field and the successful hosting of the Region 15C tournament were two tremendous achievements.

Posted Aug 19/13 - State Tournament Results -- First Weekend

The Stearns County League teams played well this first weekend, taking one of three contests.  On Friday night, Richmond lost to a solid Avon club by a 3-0 margin.  Ethan Vogt's five-hitter led Elrosa to a 6-0 shutout of Loretto on Saturday.  And Spring Hill lost a heartbreaker on Sunday to Jordan, 3-2, in 13 innings.  (By the way State Board, what the heck is Jordan doing in Class C?  They've won several state titles at the B-level).

Posted Aug 12/13 - New Region 15C Attendance Record

The recently-completed Region 15C tournament set a new attendance record.  I don't have the final count for Sunday yet, but as of Saturday a total of 3,159 paid attendees had come through the gates at both Farming and St. Martin.  I would bet we had another 350-400 there on Sunday; I'll get the actual count and will update this article.  That number doesn't include any of the players or dozens of volunteers who spent their last two weekends at our newly refurbished ballpark in Farming.  I met numerous volunteers, too, from other places including Richmond and St. Martin.

Mother Nature was very cooperative this weekend, and eight games were played at Farming and St. Martin.  Total attendance this weekend was a whopping 2,205!  Both night games at St. Martin drew between 350-375, and both days in Farming drew 725-760.

The Flames played one of their best games of the season but were edged by a very good New Munich ballclub.  Derek Roush had two hits, including a double, to lead the Farming attack.  Craig Klein went 2 for 5 with an RBI, raising his season average to a team-leading .462.

Posted Jul 2/13 - Region 15C Tournament Approaches

The greatest town team baseball event on the planet, namely the Region 15C tournament, will be held in Farming this coming August.  Games will take place on August 3-4, and August 10-11 at 11am, 1:30pm, and 4:00pm.  There will also be three night games played in St. Martin, on August 2, 3, and 9.  All of the night games start at 8:15pm.  A complete PDF bracket is available at: 2013 Region 15C Tournament.

The Farming Baseball Association is holding its annual Golf Tournament on Saturday, July 13th, at River Oaks Golf Club in Cold Spring.  Check in is 2:00pm, with a shotgun start beginning at 2:30pm.  There is a putting contest take place beforehand, starting at 1:45pm.  The cost is $30 and includes 9-holes of golf, cart, and dinner at the Trappers Pub & Grub (formerly Goatroapers).  The meal only is $10.00.

The Farming Pee Wee team finished second in this weekend's eight-team tournament, played at New Munich.  Farming beat Elrosa 7-0 and Greenwald 16-0, before losing to St. Martin 6-1 in the final.  The team is coached by Bob Mergen.  Congratulations to the team for a great tournament run!

Chris Wehseler singled, advanced on a sacrifice, stole third, and scored on an throwing error in the bottom of the 11th inning as Farming defeated the Greenwald Cubs by a 10-9 margin.  For the Flames, Chris went 3-for-4 with a double, while Nick Mergen went 4-for-6 with a triple.  Farming now stands at 3-2 in the Stearns County League-South Division, good for third place.  The game was originally scheduled to be played at Greenwald, but was moved to Farming due to standing water at Greenwald's ballpark.

For the first time since 1987, Farming will host the Region 15C baseball tournament.  A total of eight teams from the Stearns County and County Line leagues will be playing for births in the 2013 state tournament, which takes place in Maple Lake and Delano.

Craig Rausch pitched a complete game shutout as the Flames beat the Rangers 2-0 in Roscoe.  Craig threw fewer than 100 pitches during his brilliant outing, which took only two hours or so.  He gave up just four hits, struck out five, and didn't walk a single batter.

Farming used a big inning and some timely pitching to hand Richmond only its second loss of the season, 5-4, on a hot Sunday afternoon in Farming.  The largest crowd of the year was on hand, with cars filling the parking lot and several more parked along Highway 42.  After the game, Terry Schleper and Eddie Schleper were both inducted into the Farming Hall of Fame.

The Flames fell to 0-2 in the SCL league after an 8-5 loss at Lake Henry on Sunday afternoon.  The Flames got the bats rolling early.  Derek Rousch was 2-for-5 and Ian Hoffarth was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Ian Hoffarth had a bases-loaded double in the sixth, and Mike Kotten added and RBI double in the eighth for the Flames.  Brent Mergen pitched well but took the loss.

Farming has added eight additional non-league games to go along with the 13 -game SCL league schedule.  The Flames will play home-and-home series with both St. Wendel and St. Nicholas, face Pearl Lake on the road, and host single games with Upsala, New London Spicer, and Regal.  The SCL All-Star Game will take place on Friday, June 29th, 8:00pm, in Elrosa.

Posted Sep 28/11 - Saying Goodbye to a Town Team Legend

Elmer Schleper, who played on Farming's first town team in 1938 and later managed the team for well over 20 years, passed away on Sunday, September 25, at the age of 87.  Elmer was elected to the Minnesota Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982.

The U.S. Revolution, the national Australian Rules football club, finished fourth recently in an international competition held in Melbourne and Sydney.  Brent Mergen was selected Best in two of the five USA matches.

Brent Mergen, who played a variety of positions for Farming this year including pitcher, catcher, infield, and outfield, is currently competing with the U.S. Australian Rules Football Team.  The AFL International Cup, as the tournament is called, is taking place in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia, August 12-27.  Congrats to Brent!

Congratulations to Jeff Mergen, who is the new District 3 County Commissioner!  Jeff defeated the incumbent, Vince Schaefer, 6215 votes to 4705.  Jeff is committed to reducing property taxes and eliminating wasteful spending.  His first task will be to secure county funding for a new Farming electronic scoreboard (just kidding, just kidding).

Posted Aug 15/10 - Jeff Mergen advances to November 3 General Election

Flames coach Jeff Mergen has successfully advanced through the Primary Election for the position of District 3 Stearns County Commissioner.  Incumbent Vince Schaefer finished with 810 votes followed closely by Jeff with 705.  The other candidates were all well behind these two totals.  District 3 includes Cold Spring, Richmond, Avon, Eden Valley, Holdingford, Kimball, Richmond and Rockville.

Posted Aug 8/10 - Ballpark Improvements Well Under Way

The Farming Ballpark looks quite a bit different than it did after the last game of the season, just a few short weeks ago.  The outfield fence has been removed, the entire field (including the infield) has been filled in and leveled, a fresh coat of black dirt has been installed, and the field has been seeded.  A new in-ground sprinkler system is already in use, and right field has been raised several feet and is now level with the rest of the playing surface.  Everything really looks great.  And this hot and rainy weather will help that seed grow in nicely before we see our first snowfall.

The Richmond Royals broke open a close game with a five-run fourth inning, on their way to an 11-1 victory over the Flames.  Richmond used a three-run homerun and a two-run double in their big fourth inning.  The Flames had their lone tally in the seventh inning when Greg Holthaus scored on a wild pitch.

The host Lake Henry Lakers scored in every inning as they defeating the Flames 20-0 on Sunday afternoon.  The Lakers scored four runs in the second and sixth innings, and had an eight-run fourth inning.  Two Lake Henry pitchers combined to throw a seven-inning no hitter against the Flames.

The Flames knocked off the St. Wendel Saints 7-5 last Saturday in Farming.  The weather cooperated beautifully, and the boys were able to get some of the kinks out after a long winter's layoff.  It was a good positive start to the season.
