Posted Jan 11/11 - 10th-ranked Pflugerville comes up short against second-ranked Georgetown, 58-50; senior post Adesuwa Ebomwonyi paces the Panthers with another double-double
PLFUGERVILLE, Texas -- In a tightly-contested game before a near-capacity crowd, the state's 10th-ranked Pflugerville Panthers could not overcome a 10-for-10 free throw shooting effort by Georgetown in the final five minutes and fell from the unbeaten District ranks with a 58-50 setback at the hands of the Lady Eagles, ranked second in the state. The state ranks are from the TABC/Tex Preps Basketball Magazine weekly poll.

The Panthers dropped the tight game despite a season-low six turnovers and another double-double (double-figure points and rebounds) from senior forward Adesuwa Ebomwonyi. The Tulane University-bound Ebomwonyi had 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Pflugerville is now 20-5 overall and 4-1 in the District. Georgetown is 21-3, 5-0.

Both teams shot 38 percent from the floor, but the big difference took place at the free throw line where Georgetown converted all 18 of its foul shots while the Panthers went six-for-12.

Neither team led by more than five points after the first quarter. Georgetown led at intermission, 32-28.

Late in the third quarter, Pflugerville regained the lead, 45-44, on sophomore point guard Taliyah Brooks' driving layup with 1:40 to go. The third quarter ended with that score.

In the fourth quarter, Pflugerville's offense stalled as the Panthers had great looks down the stretch but could not convert, scoring just three points in the final five minutes. In this stretch, Georgetown went 10-for-10 from the foul line to seal the win.

The Lady Eagles were led by 6-4 LSU signee Krystal Forthan who had game-highs of 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Ebomwonyi was the lone Panther in double-digit scoring. Brooks and senior guard Curtiesha Woods each chipped in with nine points while junior forward Itiana Taylor had eight points and six rebounds. Texas-signee senior post Nneka Enemkpali scored seven points and had a game-high four blocks.

Georgetown had 33 rebounds while the Panthers collected 32 rebounds.

The Panthers next play Friday, Jan. 14, traveling to Leander to face District opponent Leander HS in a 7:30 p.m. varsity contest. Leander is 13-14 overall and 1-4 in the district.

NOTES: The game was billed as the Austin Toros "High School Game of the Week" - the first of its kind in Central Texas. The Toros are Austin's professional men's basketball (D-League) squad, and each week this year the Toros, along with corporate partners US Army, Austin Community College and Dick' s Sporting Goods, will highlight a signature varsity basketball match-up between two schools in Central Texas with giveaways and an appearance by the Toros mascot. The Fort Bragg U.S. Army chorale sang the national anthem. The game also was the PISD Middle School/PYBA (Pflugerville Youth Basketball Association)/Elementary School Night and the highly-entertaining Parkcrest Middle School drum performed.

The Pflugerville junior varsity posted a 76-54 win over the Georgetown JV behind 17 points from guard Taylor Ross, 16 from forward Diana Omozee and nine from forward Amy Staha.  Both the Panther freshmen Gold (A) team and the Blue (B) team lost to Georgetown.
