Wrestling: Canton Goes 5-0 To Claim Top Honors In Dual Event

Rusty, yet effective.
That was the immediate thoughts of C-Hawk coach Jeremy Ask as Canton went on to win with authority during Saturdays wrestling tournament in Yankton. Canton went 5-0 against area teams: Brandon Valley (3-2), Harrisburg (1-4), West Central (1-4), Vermillion (1-4), and Yankton (4-1).
As he gave out congratulations to his younger athletes, Ask expounded upon his feelings.
We found out today where are fitness level is at. We are not where we want to be, however, the end goal isnt today, its at the end of the season, said Ask.
Our guys are very athletic, but we wont be able to rely on that forever.
Senior Jesse Peterson (160), a three time place winnter at State, helped the C-Hawks with a solid 5-0 showing. Sophomore Alex Davies also threw down a 5-0 performance for Canton.
Overall, the Class B C-Hawks dominated every match, with the biggest margin coming from a 60-16 victory over Brandon Valley.
We have great leadership from our three seniors (Josh Miller, Aaron Powell, Braden Heidbrink). But we also have some younger guys that are doing great things too, said Ask.
Our roster is large for a Class B program, and we compare very similar to the bigger schools.
Canton placed seventh in the 2010-2011 State B Wrestling Championships. Coach Ask didnt sugarcoat his dissatisfaction with last years results.
We had a few athletes that didnt perform like they should have at state. This year, we are gunning for a top four spot, said Ask.
Eight of Cantons Wrestlers made the All Tournament Team, and they include: Alex Davies, Jordan Sehr, Tanner Orre, Jesse Peterson, Kase Jacobs, Gage Plueger, Logan Dolen, and Tanner Broughton. The other competing wrestling programs also found success during the tournament.
The Brandon Valley Lynx added four to the All Tournament Team: Adam Presler, Josh Miller, Josiah McGee, and Wyatt Winter. Harrisburg followed suit with: Zach Gross, Jake Devine, Mitch Schenk, Tom Hudson, and Matt Schirado. The Trojans of West Central added Cole Tirrel and Josh Mettler to the team. Vermillion Wrestlers Will Mart, Brett Bye and Reagan Bye were all recognized with the All-Tournament honors. The Yankton Bucks had six wrestlers from the roster make the list: Spencer Huber, Casey Skillingstad, Logan Smith, James Hisek, C.J. Warren and Jordan Lightner.
The Yankton Bucks received runner-up honors during Saturdays Invite. The Bucks walked off the mats with a 4-1 day; their biggest margin of victory coming against West Central 57-21. The closest match of the day for the Bucks was against Brandon Valley 43-30 being the final. Yankton coach Ryan Hage spoke briefly after the tournament.
