The Douglas College Baseball Program
would like to announce the hiring of Shawn Schaefer as the new Pitching Coach
for the upcoming 2011-2012 season.
Shawn is a local product that grew
up in Ridge Meadows playing both baseball and hockey at the elite level. In
high school, Shawn played three years in the BCPBL for the Coquitlam Reds. He
was also a two time member of the BC Selects program, winning a gold and silver
medal at the National Championships in 2003 and 2004.
In his grade 12 year, he was named
Premier League Co-MVP (2004) and received a full scholarship to play baseball
in Texas.
After graduation, moved on to
Midland College in Texas where he was a starter and made the All-Region team
along with making the sophomore showcase. As a sophomore, he transferred back
to Canada. At UBC he was the #1 starter and ended up going 12-2 helping the
team to its first ever World Series appearance (2006) and being named a 2nd
team All-American.
His final college seasons were with
Cumberland University in Tennessee. Finished there with an overall record of
20-3 and the ace of a dominant pitching staff. Senior year he guided his team
to a 59-8 record and a NAIA World Series Championship going 14-0 (108 K’s) and
was named a 1st team All-American.
Shawn stayed at Cumberland in 2009
to finish his Bachelor of Science degree and helped the baseball team as one of
the graduate assistant coaches working mostly with the pitchers.
Last summer Shawn was selected to play with the Canadian National
team at the World Baseball Challenge where he threw 6 innings of shutout
baseball vs. the world #1 ranked Cuban National team.
Shawn has compiled one of the most dominating college records
for any Canadian pitcher in history with an overall win/loss record of 36-5 and
a 2.00 ERA.
Our program at Douglas College is proud to announce that
Shawn Schaefer will be taking over the duties of Head Pitching Coach for
2011-2012. We know that Shawn will do a great job developing pitchers for not
only competing at the NWAACC level but also beyond Douglas in the 4 year and
professional ranks.
(Former pitching coach Brooks McNiven (2009-2011) has moved
to the position of Director of Baseball Operations at the Inside Performance –
Athlete Development Centre in North Vancouver. DC Baseball would like to thank
Brooks for his two years with the program and wish him the all best in his new
endevours) |
