October, 2011
Four Royals baseball players were recently selected to attend the NWAACC Sophomore Showcase for their outstanding play during the conference season in 2011. This constitutes the most players since 2006, when Douglas also sent 4 players to this elite event.
Coach Whitely was proud of his player's accomplishments. "It's a real tribute to what we are trying to do here at Douglas. We are trying to develop Canadian talent and provide great opportunities for player's to move on to a great 4 year school (NCAA or NAIA) or to professional baseball."
Shayne Kelly (1st base), Sheldon Sinnott (Shortstop), Jeremy Kral (Catcher), and incoming transfer Bryan Arthur (Outfield) were chosen to represent the Northern Allstar team at the weekend's showcase of the NWAACC league's best in Longview, WA. Although Arthur was not on the team in 2011, he was selected as a potential pick for the upcoming 2012 MLB draft after being drafted by the Yankees in 2010 out of high school.
At the conclusion of the day's events, all the Douglas players held their own and a couple really turned the heads of the over 100 scouts and NCAA coaches in attendance.
Sheldon Sinnott (SS) ran a 6.5 sec 60 yard time which made him the fastest player at the entire showcase (over 50 of the NWAACC's best players) and Bryan Arthur (OF) impressed with both his defense and his ability to hit the ball to all fields with power. Arthur, originally from Abbotsford, transferred back from a JC in Texas after being drafted by the Yankees in 2010.
The Douglas College Baseball team will conclude their Fall training sessions and competitive schedule on October 21st so that the team can concentrate on their academics.
